Joseph DeRisi
Joseph Lyman DeRisi is an American biochemist, specializing in molecular biology, parasitology, genomics, virology, and computational biology. Life He received a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (1992) from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Ph.D. in biochemistry (1999) from Stanford University. Joseph DeRisi is a co-president of the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, and Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with a joint appointment at the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3). He is a former Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. The Heinz Awards are individual achievement honors given annually by the Heinz Family Foundation. ''Nosema ceranae'' is a microsporidian, a small, unicellular parasite that mainly affects ''Apis cerana'', the Asiatic honey bee. Along with '' Nosema apis'', it causes the disease nosemosis, the most widespread of the diseases of adult honey bees. ''N. ceranae'' can remain dormant as a long-lived spore which is resistant to temperature extremes and dehydration. This fungus has been shown to act in a synergistic fashion with diverse insecticides such as fipronil or neonicotinoids, by increasing the toxicity of pesticides for bees, leading to higher bee mortality. Donald "Don" Emil Ganem (born September 23, 1950) is an American physician, virologist, professor emeritus of microbiology and medicine, and former global head of infectious disease research at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). Biography Ganem graduated in 1968 from Phillips Academy Andover and in 1972 from Harvard College. After two years of medical school, he took an 18-month leave of absence to work on SV40 DNA replication with George Fareed. In 1977 Ganem graduated with an M.D. from Harvard Medical School.
