Joseph Carlier
Émile Nestor Joseph Carlier (3 January 1849 – 11 April 1927), called Joseph Carlier, was a French sculptor. Biography Early years Émile Nestor Joseph Carlier was born in Cambrai on 3 January 1849, in the Rue de la Prison, the current location of the town hall. He attended the Municipal School, then at 15 joined the studio of the ornamental sculptor Lecaron in Cambrai. He began work carving the stones of the Cambrai cathedral. At one time he fell from a scaffold and was saved only by his bag's strap catching on a pole. He went to Paris, visiting the Universal Exhibition of 1867, which confirmed his vocation as an artist. Receiving no financial support from his parents, he had to support himself through minor jobs, and entered the house of a furniture manufacturer of the Faubourg Saint-Antoine. Léon Fagel
Léon Fagel (1851–1913) was a French sculptor, best known for his busts. Fagel was born in Valenciennes, won the second Prix de Rome in 1875, and the Prix de Rome in 1879. He exhibited busts of Chevreul, J. Cavelier, and Le Greffeur at the Exposition Universelle (1900), along with two large reliefs for Sacré-Cœur (Faith and Fortitude). Maurice Bailloud
Maurice Camille Bailloud (Tours, 13 October 1847 – 1 July 1921) was a French general. Career He was the son of Ennemond Henri Bailloud, a Navy lieutenant and Virginie Marie Marchand. He studied from 1866 at the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr and graduated on 5 October 1868. He participated in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871). In 1879, he married with Marie Chambert and had 4 children. He participated in the Second Madagascar expedition as Chief of staff of the French Expeditionary force under command of Jacques Duchesne. In 1900, he was sent to China as commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade to suppress the Boxer Rebellion. Promoted to Division General, he was stationed in Algeria from 1902 to 1906. Verrières-le-Buisson () is a commune in the southern suburbs of Paris, France. It is from the centre of Paris, in the Essonne department just outside the inner ring of the Île-de-France. The commune borders the river Bièvre. History The "Villa Vedrarias", was given by Childebert I in 543 to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It is the first written mention of Verrières. The current name appears during the 16th century. Under the reign of Louis XIV, who enjoyed hunting in the Verrières forest, the term "Le Buisson" was added. Vilmorin is a French seed producer. The company has a long history in France, where it was family-controlled for almost two centuries, and today exists as a publicly traded company owned principally by agro-industrial cooperative Groupe Limagrain, the largest plant breeding and seed company in the European Union. History Vilmorin was founded as a plant and seed boutique in 1743 by seed expert Claude Geoffroy and her husband Pierre Andrieux, the chief seed supplier and botanist to King Louis XV. The store was located on the quai de la Mégisserie, a street in the 1st arrondissement of Paris. In 1774, their daughter married botany enthusiast Philippe-Victoire Levêque de Vilmorin (1746-1804). Pierre Louÿs (; 10 December 1870 – 4 June 1925) was a French poet and writer, most renowned for lesbian and classical themes in some of his writings. He is known as a writer who sought to "express pagan sensuality with stylistic perfection". He was made first a Chevalier and then an Officer of the Légion d'honneur for his contributions to French literature. Life Pierre Louÿs was born Pierre Félix Louis on 10 December 1870 in Ghent, Belgium, but relocated to France, where he spent the rest of his life. Clair Josèphe Hippolyte Leris (25 January 1723 – 29 January 1803), known as Mademoiselle Clairon or La Clairon was a French actress, born at Condé-sur-l'Escaut, Hainaut, the daughter of an army sergeant. She is primarily known for developing a new style of acting in which she encouraged focus on the emotional connection between the actor and the character they played instead of what she saw as the stiff portrayals of characters traditionally performed in one manner. Condé-sur-l'Escaut
Condé-sur-l'Escaut (, literally ''Condé on the Escaut''; pcd, Condé-su-l'Escaut) is a commune of the Nord department in northern France. It lies on the border with Belgium. The population as of 1999 was 10,527. Residents of the area are known as Condéens or Condéennes. The Mayor of Condé-sur-l'Escaut is Gregory Lelong (2015).
