Joseph Bolduc
Joseph Bolduc, (June 22, 1847 – August 13, 1924) was Speaker of the Senate of Canada from 1916 to 1922. He was born in Beauce, Quebec, Beauce County, Canada East (Quebec) in 1847, the son of Augustin Bolduc, and was educated at College Sainte-Marie and Université Laval. He graduated as a public notary in 1874 but also earned his living as a farmer and businessman. In 1874, Bolduc married M.A.G. Mathier. He became a leading member of his community and successfully promoted the construction of a railway connecting his home town of Saint-Victor, Quebec, St. Victor de Tring with the rest of the province and the eastern seaboard. He was elected mayor of his town and then warden of Beauce. Beauce (electoral District)
Beauce is a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1867. In 2006, it had a population of 103,617 people, of whom 82,123 were eligible voters. The Beauce riding has the highest percentage of people who answered "Canadian" as their ethnic origin in the 2006 Census (84.0%; multiple responses). It is also the riding with the highest percentage of Whites of European descent (99.3%). Geography The riding is located in Central Quebec, to the south of Quebec City and covers the centre of Beauce, straddling the Quebec region of Chaudière-Appalaches. Philippe-Auguste Choquette
Philippe-Auguste Choquette (January 6, 1854 – December 20, 1948) was a Canadian Member of Parliament and Senator. Biography He was born on January 6, 1854, in Beloeil, Canada East to Joseph Choquette and Thaïs Audet. He studied at Université Laval and was admitted to the Quebec Bar in 1880 and to the King's Council in 1890. After running unsuccessfully in the 1882 election, he was elected as a Liberal in the riding of Montmagny in the 1887 election. He was re-elected in 1891 and 1896. From 1898 until 1904, he was a Judge in the Quebec Superior Court, Arthabaska District. In 1904, he was appointed to the Senate representing the Senatorial division of Grandville, Quebec. He resigned in 1919. He also served as President of Quebec Bulldogs hockey club for several years, winning the Stanley Cup in 1912, and 1913. He died on December 20, 1948. The ''Military Service Act, 1917'' was an act passed by the Parliament of Canada in an effort to recruit more soldiers. Background The First World War was going badly, casualties were enormous, and Canada's contribution in manpower compared unfavourably with that of other countries. Voluntary enlistment had been uneven, and the military believed they could not maintain the Canadian Corps at full strength without conscription. Encouraged by English Canadians and the British, Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden introduced the ''Military Service Act''. Riots broke out in Quebec. Robert Borden
Sir Robert Laird Borden (June 26, 1854 – June 10, 1937) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the eighth prime minister of Canada from 1911 to 1920. He is best known for his leadership of Canada during World War I. Borden was born in Grand-Pré, Nova Scotia. He worked as a schoolteacher for a period and then served his articles of clerkship at a Halifax law firm. He was called to the bar in 1878, and soon became one of Nova Scotia's most prominent barristers. Borden was elected to the House of Commons in the 1896 federal election, representing the Conservative Party. He replaced Charles Tupper as party leader in 1901, but was defeated in two federal elections by Liberal Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier in 1904 and 1908.
