Joseph Ackroyd
Joseph Ackroyd (November 23, 1847 in Little Falls, New York, Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York – March 15, 1915 in Utica, New York, Utica, Oneida County, New York) was an American politician from New York (state), New York. Life He attended the common schools in New York Mills, New York, New York Mills, and Whitestown Seminary and Business College. Then he became a grocer. He married Adelaide Hoag (1848–1936), and they had two children. Ackroyd was Supervisor of the Whitestown, New York, Town of Whitestown in 1882; and a member of the New York State Assembly (Oneida Co., 2nd D.) in 107th New York State Legislature, 1884. He was a member of the New York State Senate (36th D.) in 130th New York State Legislature, 1907 and 131st New York State Legislature, 1908. He died suddenly on March 15, 1915, at his home in Utica, New York, Utica, "while reading a newspaper"; and was buried at the Glenside Cemetery in New York Mills. Little Falls, New York
Little Falls is a city in Herkimer County, New York. The population was 4,946 at the time of the 2010 census, which is the second-smallest city population in the state, ahead of only the city of Sherrill. The city is built on both sides of the Mohawk River, at a point at which rapids had impeded travel upriver. Transportation through the valley was improved by construction of the Erie Canal, completed in 1825 and connecting the Great Lakes with the Hudson River. The city is located at the northeastern corner of the town of Little Falls and is east of Utica. Little Falls has a picturesque location on the slope of a narrow and rocky defile, through which the Mohawk River falls in less than a mile (1.6 km), forming a number of cascades. History Little Falls was first settled by Europeans around 1723, when German Palatines were granted land under the Burnetsfield Patent. Horace White (October 7, 1865 – November 27, 1943) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. He was the 37th Governor of New York from October 6, 1910 to December 31, 1910. Life He attended Syracuse Central High School, Cornell University (graduated 1887), and Columbia Law School (graduated 1889), and opened the firm of White, Cheney, Shinaman, and O'Neill in Syracuse, New York in the late 1880s or early 1890s. The 131st New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 1 to June 11, 1908, during the second year of Charles Evans Hughes's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1894, re-apportioned in 1906 and 1907, 51 Senators and 150 assemblymen were elected in single-seat districts; senators for a two-year term, assemblymen for a one-year term. The senatorial districts were made up of entire counties, except New York County (twelve districts), Kings County (eight districts), Erie County (three districts) and Monroe County (two districts). The Assembly districts were made up of contiguous area, all within the same county. On April 27, 1906, the Legislature re-apportioned the Senate districts, increasing the number to 51.
