Joseph-Rosaire Thibaudeau
Joseph-Rosaire Thibaudeau (October 1, 1837 – June 16, 1909) was a Quebec businessman and political figure. He was a Liberal member of the Senate of Canada for Rigaud division from 1878 to 1909. He was born at Cap-Santé, Lower Canada in 1837. Thibaudeau operated the Montreal branch of his older brother Isidore's company until 1895. In 1890, he was named sheriff for the city of Montreal. He was also president of the electric company and vice-president of the telephone company. Thibaudeau was a member of the first Board of directors, Bell Telephone Company of Canada ( Bell Canada) in 1880, and Northern Electric and Manufacturing Company Limited (Nortel). His nephew Alfred Thibaudeau also served in the Canadian senate. Senate Of Canada
The Senate of Canada (french: region=CA, Sénat du Canada) is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Crown and the House of Commons, they comprise the bicameral legislature of Canada. The Senate is modelled after the British House of Lords with members appointed by the governor general on the advice of the prime minister. The explicit basis on which appointment is made and the chamber's size is set, at 105 members, is by province or territory assigned to 'divisions'. The Constitution divides provinces of Canada geographically among four regions, which are represented equally. Senatorial appointments were originally for life; since 1965, they have been subject to a mandatory retirement age of 75. Lower Canada
The Province of Lower Canada (french: province du Bas-Canada) was a British colony on the lower Saint Lawrence River and the shores of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence (1791–1841). It covered the southern portion of the current Province of Quebec and the Labrador region of the current Province of Newfoundland and Labrador (until the Labrador region was transferred to Newfoundland in 1809). Lower Canada consisted of part of the former colony of Canada of New France, conquered by Great Britain in the Seven Years' War ending in 1763 (also called the French and Indian War in the United States). Quebec has 24 permanent Senate divisions that are fixed under section 22 of the Constitution Act, 1867, which provides that "In the Case of Quebec each of the Twenty-four Senators representing that Province shall be appointed for One of the Twenty-four Electoral Divisions of Lower Canada..." Alfred Thibaudeau
Alfred Arthur Thibaudeau (December 1, 1860 – August 15, 1926) was a Canadian politician. Born in Quebec City, the son of Isidore Thibaudeau, a Quebec businessman and political figure in Upper Canada, Thibaudeau was educated at the Quebec High School. He was the head of the firm of Thibaudeau Brothers. He was the president of the Wholesale Dry-Goods Association, and was a member of Council of the Montreal Board of Trade. He was a director of the Notre Dame Hospital, Governor of Université Laval, director of the Great West Life Assurance Company, and of the Park & Island Railway Co. of Montreal. He was appointed to the Senate in August, 1896 on the advice of Wilfrid Laurier representing the senatorial division of De la Vallière, Quebec. Isidore Thibaudeau
Isidore Thibaudeau (September 30, 1819 – August 18, 1893) was a Quebec businessman and political figure. He represented Quebec East in the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal from 1874 to 1877. He was born Pierre-Isidore Thibaudeau in Pointe-aux-Trembles, Lower Canada in 1819; his father was a merchant of Acadian origin. He worked as a clerk in the Quebec City branch of a firm based in Montreal. In 1847, he became a partner in the branch and, in 1856, a partner in the Montreal operation. Thibaudeau brought his brothers and later his son into the company. He helped establish two banks, the Caisse d’Épargnes de Notre-Dame de Québec and the Banque Nationale, serving as president of the latter from 1879 to 1889.
