Jordan Mechner
Jordan Mechner (born June 4, 1964) is an American video game designer, author, screenwriter, and filmmaker. He is best known for designing and programming the Broderbund Apple II games ''Karateka'' and '' Prince of Persia'' in the 1980s, the latter of which grew into a multi-platform franchise. Early life Mechner was born in New York City in 1964, into a family of European Jewish immigrants. His father is psychologist Francis Mechner, and his mother was a programmer. He attended Yale University in the 1980s. Career While at Yale, Mechner wrote several Apple II games that he submitted for publication, but which were rejected. ''Asteroid Blaster'', an ''Asteroids'' clone, was submitted to Hayden Software and abstract arcade game ''Deathbounce'' to Broderbund. Karateka (video Game)
''Karateka'' is a 1984 martial arts action game by Jordan Mechner and is his first published game, created for the Apple II while attending Yale University. The game was published in North America by Broderbund and in Europe by Ariolasoft. Along with ''Karate Champ'' and ''Yie-Ar Kung Fu'' (both also released in 1984), ''Karateka'' is one of the earliest martial arts fighting games. It was inspired by Japanese culture (Ukiyo-e art, Akira Kurosawa films, and manga comics) and by early Walt Disney Studios (Burbank), Disney animated films and silent pictures. The player controls an unnamed protagonist attempting to rescue his love interest, Princess Mariko, from Akuma's castle fortress. The character walks and runs from left to right through a linear, side-scrolling level, dealing with attackers and obstacles, while moving deeper into the fortress. Mike Newell (director)
Michael Cormac Newell (born 28 March 1942) is an English film and television director and producer. He won the BAFTA for Best Direction for '' Four Weddings and a Funeral'' (1994), which also won the BAFTA Award for Best Film, and directed the films ''Donnie Brasco'' (1997) and ''Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'' (2005). The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) is a non-profit organization of video game industry professionals. It organizes the annual Design Innovate Communicate Entertain summit, better known as D.I.C.E., which includes the presentations of the D.I.C.E. Awards. History AIAS was originally founded in 1992 by Andrew Zucker, a lawyer in the entertainment industry. ''The Last Express'' is an adventure video game designed by Jordan Mechner and published by Broderbund in 1997 for PC. Players take on the role of an American who accepts an invite by a friend to join them on the Orient Express, days before the start of World War I, only to become involved in a maelstrom of treachery, lies, political conspiracies, personal interests, romance and murder, upon boarding the train. The game is unique in how it was created, its non-linear story, and in how events in the game are conducted within real-time. The game was a commercial disappointment following its release, but received highly positive reviews and a positive post-release response.
