Jaffa
Jaffa, in Hebrew Yafo ( he, יָפוֹ, ) and in Arabic Yafa ( ar, يَافَا) and also called Japho or Joppa, the southern and oldest part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, is an ancient port city in Israel. Jaffa is known for its association with the biblical stories of Jonah, Solomon and Saint Peter as well as the mythological story of Andromeda and Perseus, and later for its oranges. Today, Jaffa is one of Israel's mixed cities, with approximately 37% of the city being Arab. Etymology The town was mentioned in Egyptian sources and the Amarna letters as ''Yapu''. Mythology says that it is named for Yafet (Japheth), one of the sons of Noah, the one who built it after the Flood. The Hellenist tradition links the name to ''Iopeia'', or Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda. Joppa, Edinburgh
Joppa is an eastern suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is bounded on the north by the coast of the Firth of Forth, on the west by Portobello of which it was a suburb when Portobello was a burgh, to the south by the open area south of Milton Road and to the east by Musselburgh in East Lothian. The name "Joppa" is of biblical origin, referring to the port of Jaffa in Israel, and was first bestowed on this part of Edinburgh in the 18th century (apparently because, like its namesake, it sits next to the sea). Joppa is now largely residential, but salt was once produced from seawater by evaporation at Joppa Pans. Joppa is a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated community in Cullman and Marshall counties, Alabama, United States. As of the 2020 census, its population was 556. History Joppa was named after the ancient city of Jaffa. In the early 20th century, Joppa was an incorporated community within Cullman County and was listed on the U.S. Census from 1900 to 1920. It did not reappear on the census until 2010 when it was made a census-designated place (CDP). On April 27, 2011, a tornado reportedly hit ground in the Joppa area as part of the 2011 Super Outbreak. Joppa, Illinois
Joppa is a village in Massac County, Illinois, United States, along the Ohio River. The population was 350 as of the 2020 census. It is part of the Paducah, KY-IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. History During the first part of the 19th century, a riverboat landing known as Copeland's Landing operated at what is now Joppa. In the early 1870s, A.J. Kuykendall, a prominent local land owner, and Jesse Baccus, who operated a local sawmill, decided to establish a town. They named the town after the Biblical city of Joppa (in modern Israel). After the arrival of the railroad in 1900, the village thrived for several years as a river-to-rail transloading station. Joppa incorporated in 1901.George W. Joppa, Maryland
Joppa is a former colonial town and current planning region of Harford County, Maryland, United States. Joppa was founded as a British settlement on the Gunpowder River in 1707 and designated as the third county seat of Baltimore County in 1712. The original boundaries of Baltimore County were defined in 1659 and contained all of modern day Baltimore County, Baltimore City, Harford and Cecil counties and parts of Howard, Carroll, Anne Arundel and Kent counties. The settlement was named for the Biblical town of Jaffa in the ancient Holy Land of modern-day Israel. Joppa Road is a county highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. The highway extends from Maryland Route 25 (MD 25) in Brooklandville east to MD 7 near White Marsh. Joppa Road has three main segments separated by very short breaks on its course through central and eastern Baltimore County. The central segment is a multi-lane highway from MD 45 and MD 146 in the county seat of Towson to U.S. Route 1 (US 1) in Perry Hall. This highway is mostly a commercial strip and parallels Interstate 695 (I-695) through Towson, Parkville, and Carney. The western and eastern segments of Joppa Road are two-lane roads through mainly residential areas. The western segment connects Brooklandville and Towson via Riderwood. Joppa, Texas
Joppa is an unincorporated community located in Burnet County, Texas, Burnet County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 34 in 2000. History The community got its start when in 1881, J. S. and Jane Danford of Delaware County, Iowa, donated two acres of land on the north bank of the river for a church. The original settlement name was Pool Branch for a nearby pool of water carved out by a waterfall on the North Fork of the San Gabriel River. By the 1880s, a cotton gin and mill were established, and a store and blacksmith shop soon followed, the only other businesses in the settlement. When a post office was established in 1891, residents submitted the biblical name “Joppa” and the postal service approved it. On May 19, 1904, the first telephone was installed in Joppa, and in 1907, an iron bridge was built across the river.
