Joni Pirtskhalaishvili
Joni Pirtskhalaishvili ( ka, ჯონი ფირცხალაიშვილი) (born 22 May 1947) is a retired Georgian lieutenant general (1999). He was the country's Minister of Defense from 15 September 1991 to 2 January 1992 and the Chief of General Staff of Georgian Armed Forces from May 1998 to September 2003. Biography Born in Lanchkhuti and a graduate of the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow, Pirtskhalaishvili commanded a Soviet motor-rifle division in Ukraine before returning to Georgia. He briefly served as the country's Defense Minister in the government of President Zviad Gamsakhurdia from September 1991 to January 1992, when Gamsakhurdia was declared deposed in a military coup. During the rule of Eduard Shevardnadze, Pirtskhalaishvili became Deputy Defense Minister under Vardiko Nadibaidze, but ultimately resigned because of differences with Nadibaidze over military reforms. Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia (country), Georgia on 2 November 2003 alongside a 2003 Georgian constitutional referendum, constitutional referendum. According to statistics released by the Georgian Election Commission, the elections were won by a combination of parties supporting President Eduard Shevardnadze. Givi Iukuridze
Givi Iukuridze ( ka, გივი იუკურიძე) (born 1956) is a retired Georgian major general who served as the Chief of the General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces from February to August 2004. Prior to his appointment in the General Staff in February 2004, Iukuridze served as the head of the Main Military Inspectorate. He was dismissed as the Chief of the General Staff soon after the renewed clashes with separatists in South Ossetia. Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, said that Russia-educated Iukuridze could no more head the military which was adopting NATO standards. According to the Georgian media speculations, the deaths of 16 Georgian servicemen in South Ossetia was the real reason of Iukuridze's dismissal.
