Jones International University
Jones International University (JIU) was a Private university, private Distance learning, online For-profit higher education in the United States, for-profit university headquartered in Centennial, Colorado. It was accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. The university closed after the Class of 2015 graduated. History In 1987 Glenn R. Jones launched the cable television network Mind Extension University (ME/U, later Knowledge TV), which enabled 30,000 students to take courses from more than 30 colleges and universities via television. In 1993, Jones started JIU, claiming to be the first university anywhere to exist completely online. For-profit higher education in the United States refers to the commercialization and privatization of American higher education institutions. For-profit colleges have been the most recognizable for-profit institutions, but commercialization has been a part of US higher education for centuries. Privatization of public institutions has also been increasing since at least the 1980s. History For-profit colleges in the U.S. have their origins in the Colonial Era. Centennial is a home rule municipality located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The city population was 108,418 at the 2020 United States Census, making Centennial the 11th most populous municipality in Colorado. Mind Extension University
Knowledge TV was a cable television channel owned by Jones Media Group that broadcast educational programming. The network was established on November 15, 1987 as Mind Extension University. At launch it partnered with Colorado State University and Annenberg Foundation. While the network was viewable by all, students were charged tuition to obtain credit for the course. Students submitted homework and contacted instructors via telephone. The following year, Washington State University, the University of Minnesota, Oklahoma State University, and SUNY/Empire State College also signed on. The North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), also known as the North Central Association, was a membership organization, consisting of colleges, universities, and schools in 19 U.S. states engaged in educational accreditation.
