Johnston Hall (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)
Robert A. Johnston Hall (or simply Johnston Hall) is a Gothic-ornamented building in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The hall houses the J. William & Mary Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University. It was designed by Milwaukee architect Charles D. Crane, completed in 1907 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. History Marquette College was established in 1881, with one four-story building on 10th and State streets accommodating 450 students. Enrollment grew until the building was crowded. In 1906, baking magnate Robert A. Johnston donated $100,000 to help Marquette build a new building near Gesu Church on Wisconsin Avenue. When more money was needed for the building, Johnston made up the difference, and the school named the building for him. Gothic architecture (or pointed architecture) is an architectural style that was prevalent in Europe from the late 12th to the 16th century, during the High and Late Middle Ages, surviving into the 17th and 18th centuries in some areas. The J. William & Mary Diederich College of Communication (or simply Diederich College of Communication) is one of the primary colleges at Marquette University, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The college is named for J. William Diederich, a former executive at Landmark Media Enterprises, and his wife, Mary. History The College of Communication was founded in 1910 as the School of Journalism. Decades later, the School of Journalism merged with the Schools of Performing Arts, Speech and Communication to form what is now the College of Communication. Gesu Church is a Jesuit parish of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a Milwaukee Landmark in 1975. Although the church is not affiliated with Marquette University, through a 1991 partnership, it ministers to the downtown campus of Marquette and surrounding neighborhood. Description Gesu, founded in 1849 as St. Gall's Parish, initially served English-speaking Irish Catholics from the near south and west sides of Milwaukee in what was the neighborhood of Tory Hill. As the parish grew, it built Holy Name Church in 1875, and by 1887 Jesuit officials combined the two parishes into one church.
