The Johnsonville Combustion Turbine Plant is a 1.2-gigawatt (1,200 MW), simple cycle natural gas power plant located in New Johnsonville, Tennessee in Humphreys County, Tennessee. It is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). Background In 1975 the TVA constructed 16 combustion turbine units at Johnsonville. Four more combustion turbine units were added in 2000. These 20 units have a combined generating capacity of 1.2 gigawatts. With the closure of the Johnsonville Fossil Plant, the TVA added a heat recovery generator to one of the combustion turbine units in 2017 to create the steam needed to produce titanium dioxide () at the nearby Chemours plant. New Johnsonville is a city in Humphreys County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. History The history of New Johnsonville is rooted in the town of Johnsonville, which was once situated on the Tennessee River about downstream. Johnsonville, named for Andrew Johnson, was most notably the site of the Battle of Johnsonville during the Civil War. Humphreys County is a county located in the western part of Middle Tennessee, in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 18,990. Its county seat is Waverly. History Humphreys County was established in 1809 from parts of Stewart County, and named for Parry Wayne Humphreys, a young Justice of the State Supreme Court, who was later elected as US Congressman from this area. The Johnsonville Fossil Plant was a 1.5-gigawatt (1,500 MW), coal power plant located in New Johnsonville, Humphreys County, Tennessee, United States. The plant generated electricity from 1951 to 2017. It was operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). History Construction of the fossil plant began in 1949. The fossil plant started commercial operations at Unit 1 on October 27, 1951. By August 1959, all ten units were operating.
