Johnny Farrell
John Joseph Farrell (April 1, 1901 – June 14, 1988) was an American professional golfer, best known for winning the U.S. Open in 1928. Over the course of his career, he won 22 PGA Tour events. Early life Born in White Plains, New York, Farrell started as a caddie and turned professional in 1922. Golf career At the 1928 U.S. Open, held at Olympia Fields Country Club near Chicago, Farrell tied with amateur Bobby Jones, then a two-time champion, after the regulation 72 holes and won the 36-hole playoff by one stroke. Farrell was voted the 1927 and 1928 Best Golf Professional in the United States, after a winning streak of six consecutive tournaments, on his road to a total of 22 career PGA Tour wins. He played for the United States in the first three Ryder Cups: 1927, 1929, and 1931. Farrell was the head professional at the Quaker Ridge Golf Club in New York from 1919 to 1930. Fort Lauderdale () is a coastal city located in the U.S. state of Florida, north of Miami along the Atlantic Ocean. New York State Open (1920s Event)
The New York State Open was the state open golf tournament of the state of New York from 1928 to 1930. In early 1928, the New York State Golf Association announced that they had the financial support from Onondaga Country Club in Syracuse to host their first state open. The first event was supposed to be limited to New York state residents but when golfers from other parts of the country arrived in Syracuse tournament officials let them in. The following year, officials formally allowed golfers from other states to participate. Billy Burke won the event over a number of "star" golfers. The following year's event was a three-horse battle between Burke, Wiffy Cox, and recent U.S. Open champion Johnny Farrell with Farrell coming out on top. Chicago Open Championship
The Chicago Open was a golf tournament played in the Chicago area. A Chicago District Open was first held in 1914. From 1926 to 1928 it became a national event. It was held again from 1937 to 1941, although there was no event in 1939. The Hale America National Open Golf Tournament was held in Chicago in 1942 and the Chicago Victory Open was played from 1943 to 1948. It was revived again as the Gleneagles-Chicago Open Invitational in 1958 and 1959. History The 1937 event was played at Medinah Country Club, Medinah, Illinois from July 23 to 25 and was won by Gene Sarazen with a score of 290. The Massachusetts Open is the Massachusetts state open golf tournament, open to both amateur and professional golfers. It is organized by Mass Golf (formerly the Massachusetts Golf Association). Metropolitan Open
The Metropolitan Open is a golf tournament organized by the Metropolitan Golf Association. In the early 20th century it was one of the top events in the country and was retroactively given PGA Tour-level status. History The tournament has been played annually since 1905, and is the third oldest "open" golf tournament in the United States, after the U.S. Open and Western Open. It was staged for the first time in 1905 at Fox Hills Golf Club on Staten Island, which played the dual role of host and sponsor. Shawnee Open
The Shawnee Open is a golf tournament that was first held in 1912. It is played at The Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort in Smithfield Township, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. The couse was completed in 1911, the first ever design by renowned architect A. W. Tillinghast. The Shawnee Open was recognized as a PGA Tour event from 1916 to 1937. While no longer recognized as a PGA Tour event, there have been more than 60 Shawnee Opens played. It is still held annually, and is now sponsored by the Philadelphia section of the PGA of America. In 1938, Shawnee hosted the PGA Championship and the Shawnee touring professional, Sam Snead, lost to Paul Runyan 8 and 7. According to legend, Tommy Armour hit 10 straight balls out of bounds and scored the first ever "Archaeopteryx" (15 or more over-par) when he made a 23 on a par-5, for 18-over-par at the 1927 Shawnee Open.
