John Young (professor Of Greek)
John Young FRSE (1747–1820) was an 18th/19th century professor of Greek at the University of Glasgow from 1774 to 1820 (listing many figures of the Scottish Enlightenment amongst his students), and joint founder of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He was affectionately known as Cocky Bung (alluding to his father's job as a cooper). Life Young was born in Glasgow on 27 January 1747, the second son of John Young, a cooper. In 1764, he entered the University of Glasgow graduating with an MA in 1769. He then became an assistant to Prof James Moor. He succeeded Moor as professor of Greek in 1774 aged 27. He was Clerk of the University Senate from 1779, and Curator of the College Chambers from 1781. On 9 June 1774 he became professor of Greek at the University, and proved an efficient and popular teacher. John Chin Young
John Chin Young 容澤泉 (1909–1997) was a painter who was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on March 26, 1909. He was the son of Chinese immigrants and began drawing at the age of eight, stimulated by Chinese calligraphy, which he learned in Chinese language school. Young had his first and only art lessons while a student at President William McKinley High School in Honolulu. Thereafter, his art was entirely self-taught. Young is best known for his Zen-like depictions of horses (such as the untitled watercolor), paintings of children (such as '' Children on Carousel''), and abstractions (such as ''Tantalus''). Over the years, he acquired an important collection of ancient Asian art, which he donated to the Honolulu Museum of Art and the University of Hawaii at Manoa as the John Young Museum. John Francis Young
John Francis Young (14 January 1893 – 7 November 1929) was a Canadian soldier who served in the First World War. Young was a recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Young was one of the seven Canadians who were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions on one single day, 2 September 1918, for actions across the 30 km long Drocourt-Quéant Line near Arras, France. The other six were Bellenden Hutcheson, Arthur George Knight, William Metcalf, Claude Joseph Patrick Nunney, Cyrus Wesley Peck and Walter Leigh Rayfield. John Preston Young
John Preston Young (1847–1934) was an American Confederate veteran, judge and historian. Early life John Preston Young was born on April 18, 1847, in Chulahoma, Mississippi. His father, Reverend A. W. Young, was a Presbyterian minister. Young was of Scotch-Irish and French descent on his paternal side. He moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his family at the age of twelve. Young attended the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi. In 1864, in the midst of the American Civil War, Young joined the Confederate States Army, serving under General Nathan Bedford Forrest. After the war, he returned to Ole Miss and graduated. John Young ( 17401781) was a captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War, commander of the which was lost at sea. Background He began his seafaring career at an early age in the colonial merchant marine and, at the start of the American Revolution, was commissioned 23rd on the list of captains in the Continental Navy. On 20 September 1776, the Continental Congress directed Young to take the sloop-of-war to Martinique to protect American mercantile shipping in the West Indies. Collaterally, ''Independence'' was to raid British shipping whenever the opportunity arose. On 5 July 1777, Young was ordered to Nantes, France, and subsequently arrived at Lorient with two prizes. On 17 February 1778, while in French waters, he sailed through the French Fleet, saluting that nation's government with a 13-gun salute. John Allen Young CBE (7 August 1921 in Winchester – 17 September 2006, Wisborough Green, West Sussex) was an English brewer. He was for many years chairman of the Young's Brewery in Wandsworth, working there for over 50 years. Early life Both his father, William Allen Young and his mother, Joan Barrow Simonds, were from well-known brewing families. John was educated at the Nautical College in Pangbourne. During the Second World War, he served as a fighter pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander in 1945 at the age of 24. During his service in the navy, he had flown 25 different types of aircraft and landed on six aircraft carriers.. John Orr Young (June 25, 1886 – May 1, 1976) was an American advertiser who, with Raymond Rubicam, founded the Young & Rubicam advertising agency. His first job in advertising was at the ''Salt Lake City Tribune'' in 1909; in 1910, he joined Lord & Thomas, and in 1913, he was hired by Procter & Gamble to manage advertising for Crisco. In 1918, he worked at the Armstrong agency in Chicago, where he shared an office with Raymond Rubicam. In 1921, he worked at N. W. Ayer & Son, where Rubicam was again his coworker. In 1923, Rubicam was denied a promotion to partner, and he and Young left Ayer to found their own agency. In 1927, Young left the firm of Young & Rubicam, and in 1934 he retired from advertising. John Young (1827 – 27 February 1907) was an Australian bowler, builder, politician and alderman. Life and career Young was born in Foot's Cray, Kent, England and died in Annandale, Sydney, New South Wales. After moving to Victoria, Australia, in 1855, he had mixed results as a builder. He then moved to Sydney in 1866 and proceeded to make his mark. As a result, he is especially remembered as the builder of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney (designed by William Wardell), and the Johnston Street group of houses in Annandale. The most outstanding house in the group was The Abbey, a sandstone, heritage-listed house in the Victorian Free Gothic style.
