International Polo Cup
The International Polo Cup, also called the Newport Cup and the Westchester Cup, is a trophy in polo that was created in 1876 and was played for by teams from the United States and United Kingdom. The match has varied in length over the years from a single game to the best of three games. In 1886 the two nations decided to make the polo match a continuing competition. A total of 12 matches were conducted between 1886 and 1939 between the two countries. The tournament was suspended during World War II and, due to changing times and interests, not revived until 1992. The last match was held on July 28, 2013 at Guards Polo Club. History The cup was first awarded to the team of Capt.John Henry Watson in 1876* in Newport, Rhode Island. Brigadier-General Malcolm Orme Little, (29 November 1857 – 1 February 1931) was a cavalry officer in the British Army and champion polo player. He commanded a cavalry brigade in the Second Boer War and a yeomanry brigade in the First World War. Early life Malcolm Orme Little was born on 29 November 1857 at Sussex Square, Hyde Park Gardens, Paddington, Middlesex, England, he was the second son of General Sir Archibald Little, and his wife Jane (''née'' Orme). Military career He obtained his first commission as an infantry second-lieutenant in the Royal North Gloucester Militia on 26 September 1877. Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Thompson Lawley, 4th Baron Wenlock, CB (1856–1918) was a British Army officer and polo champion who became the 4th Baron Wenlock and the 11th Lawley Baronet of Spoonhill in 1912. Early life Lawley was born on 21 August 1856, the second son and sixth child of Beilby Lawley the 2nd Baron Wenlock and his wife Lady Elizabeth (née Grosvenor). Military service Lawley joined the British Army and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the 7th Hussars on 11 February 1876. He served in the Nile Expedition of 1884–1885, and was promoted to captain on 21 July 1885, to major on 5 May 1893, and to lieutenant-colonel on 26 June 1899. In 1902 he served in South Africa during the Second Boer War, for which he was mentioned in despatches (dated 8 April 1902) and was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB). The Hurlingham Club is an exclusive private social and athletic club located in the Fulham area of London, England. Founded in 1869, it has a Georgian-style clubhouse set in of grounds. It is a member of the Association of London Clubs. History Early history The Gun Club was formed in 1860 at the Hornsey Wood Tavern, which stood in what today is Finsbury Park in Harringay, London. The creation of the park in 1867 forced a relocation and Frank Heathcote received the permission of Richard Naylor to promote live pigeon shooting at his Hurlingham estate. His next step was the formation of the Hurlingham Club for this purpose and "as an agreeable country resort".
