John W. Lane
John William Lane (February 22, 1835 – September 16, 1888) was a printer, state legislator, state senator, and mayor of Dallas, Texas. Biography John W.Lane was born in Kentucky to Thomas H. and Elizabeth B. (Edwards) Lane. The family moved to Texas in 1849, settling in Fannin County. John Lane moved to Dallas in 1857. There, he married Betty Crutchfield, daughter of Thomas F. and Frances M. Crutchfield on January 5, 1860. The two had one son, Clarence C. Lane. Crutchfield died in January 1866. Lane married a second time to L. Emma Thompson Hughes of San Marcos, Texas, on January 8, 1868. Lane was a printer by trade and was involved in publishing the ''Dallas Herald'' with his brother-in-law, John Swindell. Two newspapers of general circulation in Dallas, Texas (USA) have operated under the name ''Dallas Herald''. First ''Dallas Herald'' (1849-1885) The first permanent settler of Dallas, John Neely Bryan, settled there in 1841. The first local newspaper appeared in 1849, when James Wellington Latimer (known as “Weck,” “Wake,” and “Mark”) established a weekly newspaper, the ''Dallas Herald''. Latimer and William Wallace had purchased the ''Texas Times'', published in Paris, Texas, and moved it to Dallas to become the ''Herald''. The first few issues may have appeared under the name the ''Cedar Snag'', but the nameplate read ''Dallas Herald'' by December 1849. Latimer became sole owner and editor when Wallace retired in 1850. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE; also often known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks) is an American fraternal order founded in 1868, originally as a social club in New York City. History The Elks began in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks". It was established as a private club to elude New York City laws governing the opening hours of public taverns. The Elks borrowed rites and practices from Freemasonry. Membership Belief in a Supreme Being became a prerequisite for membership in 1892. The word "God" was substituted for Supreme Being in 1946. The Texas and Pacific Railway Company (known as the T&P) was created by federal charter in 1871 with the purpose of building a southern transcontinental railroad between Marshall, Texas, and San Diego, California. History Under the influence of General Buell the TPRR was originally to be gauge, but this was overturned when the state legislature passed a law requiring gauge. The T&P had a significant foothold in Texas by the mid-1870s. Construction difficulties delayed westward progress, until American financier Jay Gould acquired an interest in the railroad in 1879. The T&P never reached San Diego; instead it met the Southern Pacific at Sierra Blanca, Texas, in 1881.
