John Tanner (rugby Union)
John Maurice Tanner (11 January 1927 – 5 October 2020) was a New Zealand rugby union player. A second five-eighth and three-quarter, Tanner represented Otago and Auckland at a provincial level, and was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks The New Zealand national rugby union team, commonly known as the All Blacks ( mi, Ōpango), represents New Zealand in men's international rugby union, which is considered the country's national sport. The team won the Rugby World Cup in 1987, ..., from 1950 to 1954. He played 24 matches for the All Blacks, including five internationals, and captained the team on two occasions. Rugby Union Positions
In the game of rugby union, there are 15 players on each team, comprising eight forwards (wearing jerseys numbered 1–8) and seven backs (numbered 9–15). In addition, there may be up to eight replacement players "on the bench", numbered 16–23. Players are not restricted to a single position, although they generally specialise in just one or two that suit their skills and body types. Players that play multiple positions are called "utility players". Forwards compete for the ball in scrums and Line-out (rugby union), line-outs and are generally bigger and stronger than the backs.
