John Stourton, 9th Baron Stourton
John Stourton, 9th Baron Stourton (1553–1588) was the elder son of Charles Stourton, 8th Baron Stourton by his wife Anne Stanley, a daughter of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby. His father was executed for murder when he was a small child, but the property passed to the son. Life He was one of the peers who tried Mary, Queen of Scots. Charles Stourton, 8th Baron Stourton
Charles Stourton, 8th Baron Stourton (c. 1520 – 1557) was an English peer who was executed for murder. Life He was the eldest son of William Stourton, 7th Baron Stourton and Elizabeth Dudley, daughter of Edmund Dudley, a key adviser to Henry VII. His parents' marriage was unhappy, due largely to his father's liaison with Agnes ap Rhys, or Rice, daughter of Rhys ap Gruffydd and granddaughter of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk; in their later years, his parents lived apart. To the understandable chagrin of his children, William left almost the whole of the Stourton inheritance to Agnes Rice, resulting in years of litigation between his children and Agnes. Charles was on very bad terms with his father, calling him a "false hypocrite" for whom prison would be too good. Stourton succeeded his father as baron in 1548. Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby KG (c. 10 May 1509 – 24 October 1572) was an English nobleman and politician. He reigned over the Isle of Mann until his death, and then was succeeded by his son. Early life At the age of thirteen, Edward received the titles and estates of his father, the 2nd Earl of Derby, and King Henry VIII took responsibility for bringing him up until he was of age. His commissioners, including Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, were responsible for most of his affairs. In 1528, he accompanied Cardinal Wolsey on a mission to France, and in 1530, he was one of the peers who gave Pope Clement VII the declaration regarding Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon. Mary, Queen of Scots (8 December 1542 – 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart or Mary I of Scotland, was Queen of Scotland from 14 December 1542 until her forced abdication in 1567. Frances Newton, Baroness Cobham (1539 – 17 October 1592) was an English aristocratic woman who served Queen Elizabeth I of England as a Lady of the Bedchamber, and was one of her closest female friends. She was the second wife of William Brooke, 10th Baron Cobham. Family Frances was born in 1539, one of the 19 children of Sir John Newton, Knight, of Barrs Court, Gloucestershire and East Harptree, Somerset, who lived in Gloucestershire and died before November 1568 with will probated on 17 November. Edward Stourton, 10th Baron Stourton (c. 1555 – 7 May 1633) was a younger son of Charles Stourton, 8th Baron Stourton and Lady Anne Stanley, daughter of Edward Stanley, 3rd Earl of Derby. His father was executed for murder in 1557. He succeeded his brother John in 1588. In 1605, in the aftermath of the Gunpowder Plot, Edward was imprisoned in the Tower of London due to his having received a letter from his cousin and brother-in-law, Sir Francis Tresham, telling him to be absent from Parliament. Francis was one of the leading conspirators in the plot. Nothing was proved against Edward and it emerged that several other Roman Catholic peers had received similar warnings. He was released without charge. He married his cousin, Frances Tresham, daughter of Sir Thomas Tresham and Muriel Throckmorton. Baron Stourton is a title in the Peerage of England, It was created by patent in 1448 for John Stourton. In 1878, the ancient barony of Mowbray was called out of abeyance in favour of the twentieth Baron Stourton. About two weeks later, the barony of Segrave was also called out of abeyance in his favour. Thereafter, the three baronies remained united. The formal title is Baron Mowbray, Segrave and Stourton.
