John Aikman Stewart
John Aikman Stewart (August 26, 1822 – December 18, 1926) was a New York City banker who during the administration of Grover Cleveland replenished the nation's gold supply by issuing new bonds. He was also the third person in its history to serve as acting President of Princeton University from 1910 to 1912. He also invested in the founding of The United States Trust Company, United States Trust Company, a precursor to Bank of America, and was its secretary from 1853 to 1864. Biography Stewart was born on August 26, 1822. He graduated from Columbia College (New York), Columbia College in 1840. During the presidency of Grover Cleveland he replenished the nation's gold supply by organizing a syndicate that bought $50,000,000 in bonds. He died on December 18, 1926, and was the oldest surviving Columbia University, Columbia alumnus at that time. Major John Alexander McLaren Stewart of Ardvorlich (25 March 1904 – 11 May 1985) was a Scottish military officer, historian and the author of several authoritative works on the history of various Scottish clans. Published works His works include ''The Stewarts: The Highland branches of a royal name'', ''The Camerons: A History of Clan Cameron'', and ''The Grahams''. His 344-page work ''The Camerons: A History of Clan Cameron'' was published by the Clan Cameron Association in 1971, and highly praised by Colonel Sir Donald Hamish Cameron of Lochiel, the Clan Chief at the time and Stewart’s brother-in-law. Considered "the definitive book on the clan" by present-day Camerons, it is proudly sold at The Clan Cameron Museum at Achnacarry. John Stewart (February 10, 1795 – September 16, 1860) was an American merchant and politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from Connecticut from 1843 to 1845. Biography Born in Chatham, Connecticut, Stewart completed preparatory studies. He became engaged in shipbuilding and in the mercantile business in Middle Haddam. Early political career He served as member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1830, and in the Connecticut State Senate from 1832 to 1837. He served as judge of the county court of Middletown, in Middlesex County, Connecticut. Congress Stewart was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving from March 4, 1843 to March 3, 1845. John Allan Stewart (1 June 1942 – 7 December 2016) was a Scottish Conservative politician and Scottish Office minister. Early life Stewart was born on 1 June 1942 in North Fife. He attended Bell Baxter High School in Cupar. He then studied at St. Andrews University and Harvard University, where he obtained a first class degree. Career He was a lecturer in Political Economy at St. Andrews before standing unsuccessfully for the Dundee East constituency in 1970. He was briefly a councillor in the London Borough of Bromley in the mid-1970s. In the 1970s, he also acted as the Secretary of the Confederation of British Industry. John Anthony Benedict Stewart (24 May 1927 – 12 September 1995) was a British geologist, colonial administrator and diplomat who was the first British ambassador to the unified Vietnam. Career Stewart was at school at St Illtyd's College in Cardiff (now St Illtyd's Catholic High School), then served in the Royal Navy 1944–47. After being demobilised in 1947 he studied at University College, Cardiff, and gained a first-class degree in mineralogy and petrology. He then did post-graduate research at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and gained a diploma in geochemistry from Imperial College London. He joined the Colonial Geological Survey Service in 1952 and was sent to the then British Somaliland; he published several papers on the geology of the area. John Stewart (1789 – 14 March 1860) was a British Conservative and Tory politician and pro-slavery lobbyist. He was possibly the second mixed-race Member of Parliament (MP) of the Parliament of the United Kingdom after James Townsend. Family Stewart was an illegitimate son of former Camelford Tory MP John Stewart (1754/5–1826) and Mary Duncan. Upon his father's death, he took ownership of plantations in Grenada and Demerara, as well as the family home in Albany, London. However, by 1830, he was living in Wellington Street, Westminster, with his wife, Elizabeth, née Vincent, and son William Duncan Stewart (born April 1829).
