John Smith (English Filmmaker)
John Smith (born 1952, Walthamstow, England) is a British avant garde filmmaker noted for his use of humour in exploring various themes that often play upon the film spectator's conditioned assumptions of the medium. His film '' The Girl Chewing Gum'' has been called one of the most important avant-garde films of the 20th century. Biography John Smith studied film at the Royal College of Art. After graduating in 1977, he became involved in the activities of the London Filmmakers’ Co-op. Strongly influenced by conceptual art and the structural materialist ideas that dominated British artists' filmmaking at that time, but also fascinated by the immersive power of narrative and the spoken word, he has developed a body of work that reworks and transforms reality, playfully exploring and exposing the language of cinema. Background The film, made as the ideological opposition to mainstream cinema, was inspired by a scene in François Truffaut's 1973 film ''Day for Night'' in which the director gives instructions to the actors, and even tells a dog to urinate on a lamppost. Summary At Stamford Road in Dalston Junction of east London, the camera follows pedestrians, cars and birds while a narrator, who appears to be the (fictional) director behind the camera, seems to direct their actions. Open Eye Gallery is a photography gallery and archive in Liverpool, UK that was established in 1977. It is housed in a purpose-built building on the waterfront at Mann Island, its fourth location. Open Eye Gallery comprises an exhibition space on one floor and an archive space on another, and has large-scale graphic art installations on its external facade. It is the only gallery dedicated to photography and related media in North West England. It is a non-profit organisation and a registered charity.
