John R. Massaro
John R. Massaro (born May 22, 1930) is a retired United States Marine who served as the 8th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps from 1977 to 1979. Early life Massaro was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 22, 1930. He graduated from Orrville High School in Orrville, Ohio, in 1948 and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on August 6, 1948. He underwent recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Military career Following recruit training, Massaro was assigned to the 1st Battalion 6th Marines as a rifleman, before transferring to Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. He remained there until March 1950. From Camp Pendleton, he was assigned to the Marine Barracks, U.S. Navy Supply Depot, Clearfield, Utah, as a security guard. Clearfield is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. The population was 31,364 at the 2020 census. 4th Force Reconnaissance Company (4th Force Recon) is a United States Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance, force reconnaissance unit of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni
is a United States Marine Corps air station located in the Nishiki river delta, southeast of Iwakuni Station in the city of Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan. History The Japanese government bought a large portion of what is today MCAS Iwakuni in 1938, with the view of establishing a naval air station. They commissioned the new base 8 July 1940. When World War II started, the Iwakuni air station was used as a training and defense base. The station housed 96 trainers and 150 Zero fighter planes on the airstrip. In September 1943, a branch of the Etajima Naval Academy was established here, with approximately 1,000 cadets undergoing training in the Basic, Junior and Senior Officer's schools at any one time. The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing is an aviation unit of the United States Marine Corps that serves as the Aviation Combat Element of the III Marine Expeditionary Force. ''Oorah'' is a battle cry common in the United States Marine Corps since the mid-20th century. It is comparable to Hooah in the United States Army, the United States Air Force, and the United States Space Force, or Hooyah in the United States Navy and the United States Coast Guard. 1st Force Reconnaissance Company
1st Force Reconnaissance Company conducts deep reconnaissance and direct action raids in support of I Marine Expeditionary Force requirements across the range of military operations to include crisis response, expeditionary operations and major combat operations. 1st Force Recon Company was deactivated 26 October 2006 and the majority of the personnel were used to create 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion. Prior to the deactivation, General James Mattis, the MEF Commanding General at the time, transferred two Force Recon platoons to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and activated the Deep Reconnaissance Company.
