The Cardigan District of Boroughs was a parliamentary constituency in Wales which returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom and its predecessors, from 1542 until it was abolished for the 1885 general election. The borough constituency comprised the four towns of Cardigan, Aberystwyth, Lampeter and Adpar - geographically separated from each other but all within the county of Cardiganshire. John Llewellyn Powell (21 March 1904 – 30 November 1959) was a cricketer who played first-class cricket in New Zealand from 1928 to 1933. Life and career Powell was born in Christchurch and educated at Christchurch Boys' High School. Tall and strongly built, he had a reputation as a big hitter. In Christchurch senior cricket for Riccarton he scored more than 5000 runs and hit ten centuries, "each of them memorable for their violence and speed". Although Powell was an all-rounder in club cricket, for Canterbury he played as a specialist batsman who went in late in the order. In 1930 he established a New Zealand seventh-wicket record that still stands. Air Vice Marshal John Frederick Powell, (12 June 1915 – 24 November 2008) was a long-serving officer at RAF College Cranwell. RAF career Powell was born in Somerset, and was educated at King's College School, Cambridge, Lancing College and King's College, Cambridge. He was commissioned into the special duties branch of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1939 and spent the Second World War with RAF Coastal Command in the operations room at RAF Aldergrove (1939–1945). He flew on operational sorties against U-boats and was mentioned in despatches. John Joseph Powell (September 22, 1925September 24, 2009) was a Jesuit priest and author, and brother of Rita Donlan and William Powell. He received elementary-school education at the John B. Murphy public school in Chicago. In June 1943, Powell graduated from the Loyola Academy in Chicago. In August 1943, he entered the Society of Jesus at Milford, Ohio. In the fall of 1947, he began a three-year course in philosophy at West Baden College, and enrolled in Loyola University, where he took a Bachelor of Arts degree the following June. He began graduate work at Loyola in 1948 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1956. John Alfred Powell FRSE FIEE FRSA (1923–1996) was a 20th-century British physicist and company director. His most important creation was the EMI body scanner. Life Powell was born on 4 November 1923 in Islip near Oxford, the son of Algernon Powell and his wife Constance Elsie Honour. From the tiny primary school he won a scholarship to be educated at Bicester County School in Oxfordshire. In the Second World War he joined as an apprentice in the Royal Air Force based at RAF Halton in 1939, but was invalided out in 1941. He found a place assisting at Clarendon Laboratory at Oxford, and (taking several night-classes to improve his qualifications) then won a place at Oxford University studying physics. John Powell (September 6, 1882 – August 15, 1963) was an American pianist, ethnomusicologist and composer. Along with Annabel Morris Buchanan, he helped found the White Top Folk Festival, which promoted music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains. A firm believer in segregation and white supremacy, Powell also helped found the Anglo-Saxon Clubs of America, which soon had numerous posts in Virginia. He contributed to the drafting and passage of the Racial Integrity Act of 1924, which institutionalized the one-drop rule by classifying as black (colored) anyone with African ancestry. John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 – September 23, 1902) was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for his 1869 geographic expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell was appointed by US President James A. Garfield to serve as the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey (1881–1894) and proposed, for development of the arid West, policies that were prescient for his accurate evaluation of conditions.
