John Pierce (public Servant)
John Eric Pierce is a senior Australian public servant and policymaker. From 2010 to 2020, he acted as Chairman of the Australian Energy Market Commission. Life and career Pierce joined the NSW Department of the Treasury in 1993 as its Chief Economist. He went on to become Secretary of the Department for nearly 12 years from 1997 until November 2008, NSW's longest serving Treasury Secretary since 1922. During his time as Secretary of the NSW Treasury, Pierce was a key architect of the Iemma government's plan to privatise the state's electricity industry. Between August 2004 and January 2005 he was on assignment in the United States, based at Boston University to explore policy options to respond to long-term budget pressures from an aging population and expenditure growth. Australian Energy Market Commission
The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) was set up by the Council of Australian Governments through the Ministerial Council on Energy in 2005. The AEMC was established by the ''Australian Energy Market Commission Establishment Act 2004'' (SA), and commenced in July 2005. The Commission consists of one full-time and two part-time Commissioners. Two Commissioners are appointed by the participating State and Territory jurisdictions and one Commissioner is appointed by the Commonwealth. In 2008, the AEMC completed a review of Victoria's and South Australia's retail gas and electricity markets. In both states it was found that competition in the market was adequate for deregulation. Peter Boxall
Peter John Boxall is a former senior Australian public servant and policymaker. Background and early life Peter Boxall was brought up on a farm in Victoria. From year nine, he went to boarding school at Ballarat Grammar. He attained a Master of Economics from the Australian National University in 1973. Career Boxall spent seven years working at the International Monetary Fund in the United States. He then chose to study for his doctorate at the University of Chicago with supervision from Gary Becker, Robert Lucas and Sherwin Rosen.
