John Parks Almand
John Parks Almand (May 8, 1885 – March 24, 1969) was an American architect who practiced in Arkansas from 1912 to 1962. Among other works, he designed the Art Deco Hot Springs Medical Arts Building, which was the tallest building in Arkansas from 1930 to 1958. Several of his works, including the Medical Arts Building and Little Rock Central High School, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Biography He was born in Lithonia, Georgia. He received a bachelor of science degree from Emory College in 1907 and subsequently received a bachelor of architecture degree from Columbia University in 1911. He then worked as the head of the architecture department for a large engineering company in Cuba for one year. In 1912, he moved to Arkansas to work for the firm of Charles L. Thompson. Lithonia, Georgia
Lithonia (, ; AAVE: ) is a city in eastern DeKalb County, Georgia, United States. The city's population was 2,662 at the 2020 census. Lithonia is in the Atlanta metropolitan area. "Lithonia" means "city/town of stone". Lithonia is in the heart of the Georgian granite-quarrying and viewing region, hence the name of the town, from the Greek , for “stone”. The huge nearby Stone Mountain is composed of granite, while the Lithonia gneiss is a form of metamorphic rock. The Stone Mountain granite is younger than, and has intruded the Lithonia gneiss. The area has a history of rock quarries. The mines were served by the Georgia Railroad and Atlanta, Stone Mountain & Lithonia Railway. Some of the rock quarries have been converted to parkland, and the rail lines to rail-trail. The First Presbyterian Church is a historic church in Little Rock, Arkansas. It was designed by architect John Parks Almand and was built in 1921. It is a high quality local interpretation of the Gothic Revival architecture, Gothic Revival style. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. John Parks Almand had worked in the Charles L. Thompson and associates, firm of Charles L. Thompson prior to this design commission. It was done for a congregation established in 1828, the oldest Presbyterian congregation in the state. Portland is a town in Ashley County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 430 at the 2010 census. Portland was first settled in the 1830s, and named for its early status as a steamboat port. Portland United Methodist Church
The Portland United Methodist Church is a historic church building at 300 N. Main St. in Portland, Arkansas The Craftsman style two story T-shaped building was built in 1924 to a design by architect John Parks Almand. The building is faced in brick laid in a running bond pattern. The roof is ceramic tile, with broad overhanging eaves supported by distinctive triangular knee braces. The building is the largest and most prominent building in Portland's small downtown area. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Philander Smith University (previously Philander Smith College) is a private historically black college in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is a founding member of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF). Philander Smith College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. History Philander Smith College was officially founded in 1877 under the name of Walden Seminary to provide educational opportunities for emancipated slaves west of the Mississippi River. In 1882 the school was renamed Philander Smith College in honor of the financial contributions of Adeline Smith, widow of Philander Smith. Lane Hotel
The Lane Hotel is a historic former hotel building in Rogers, Arkansas, United States. It is a five-story yellow brick Spanish Revival building, designed by architect John Parks Almand and completed in 1929. It is the largest Spanish Revival building in Arkansas, with a prominent colonnade of arches at the second level, above a first floor series of commercial storefronts, and a central tower. The hotel was not successful, having been completed just at the outset of the Great Depression, and went through a succession of owners before closing in 1965. Scott is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Lonoke and Pulaski counties in the central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. Per the 2020 census, the population was 97. The Land's End Plantation, also known as James Robert Alexander House, is a historic plantation at 1 Land's End Land in rural southeastern Pulaski County, Arkansas, off Arkansas Highway 161 south of Scott. It is a working plantation, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The main plantation complex includes a 1925 Tudor Revival house, designed by John Parks Almand, and more than 20 outbuildings. AR 161, which passes close to the main house, is lined by pecan trees planted about 1900 by James Robert Alexander, the plantation owner. Fordyce is a small town in Dallas County, Arkansas, United States. Its population has been decreasing since the 1980's when the town reached an all time high of 5,175. The population in 2020 was 3,396 down from 4,300 at the 2010 census, and from 4,799 in 2000. The city is the county seat, home to the 1911 Dallas County Courthouse.
