John P. Sullivan (politician)
John P. Sullivan (April 23, 1843 – September 30, 1898) was a farmer, merchant and political figure on Prince Edward Island. He represented 2nd Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1890 to 1893 as a Conservative. He was born in New London, Prince Edward Island, the son of William Sullivan and Mary McCarthy, Irish immigrants. He was a general merchant in St. Peters. He was married twice: to Ellen MacDonald in 1873 and Helen MacDonald in 1877. Sullivan was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1893. He died suddenly at the age of 56 while travelling to Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen Provinces and territories of Canada, provinces and territories of Canada. The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. New London is a Canadian rural community located in Queens County, Prince Edward Island. Situated in the township of Lot 21, halfway between Kensington and Cavendish, New London was formerly known as Clifton and previous to that, Graham's Corner. New London is primarily a farming and fishing community with its neatly manicured fields and gently rolling hills providing pastoral scenery surrounding a busy harbour. In recent decades tourism has played an increasingly important role in the community's economy. Lucy Maud Montgomery, one of Canada's most famous authors, was born in New London on November 30, 1874. Charlottetown
Charlottetown is the capital and largest city of the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island, and the county seat of Queens County. Named after Queen Charlotte, Charlottetown was an unincorporated town until it was incorporated as a city in 1855. It was the site of the famous Charlottetown Conference in 1864, the first gathering of Canadian and Maritime statesmen to discuss the proposed Maritime Union. This conference led, instead, to the union of British North American colonies in 1867, which was the beginning of the Canadian confederation. PEI, however, did not join Confederation until 1873. From this, the city adopted as its motto ''Cunabula Foederis'', "Birthplace of Confederation". William Wilfred Sullivan
Sir William Wilfred Sullivan (December 6, 1839 – September 30, 1920) was a Prince Edward Island journalist, politician and jurist, the fourth premier of Prince Edward Island. A native of Hope River, Sullivan had a career as an assistant editor at the ''Charlottetown Herald'' as well as a lawyer before being elected to the provincial legislature in 1872 as a Liberal MLA. A staunch Catholic, Sullivan became leader of the opposition in 1877 to the Protestant coalition government of Louis Henry Davies which had been formed to implement a public, secular school system that denied funding to Roman Catholic separate schools. Sullivan reorganised the Conservative Party and was asked by the lieutenant governor to become premier once Davies' coalition broke up and became unable to command a majority in the assembly.
