John Moore (piper)
John Moore (1834–1894) was an Irish piper. Moore was born in or near the town of Galway about 1834. His father died while he was yet a boy, his mother remarried to Martin O'Reilly, himself a celebrated piper. O'Reilly tutored Moore on the pipes. At some point, Moore emigrated to the United States, enlisting in the navy, in which he served "for quite a few years." After leaving the navy, he settled in Brooklyn, working as a professional piper around New York City. On an 1887 engagement in Springheld, Ohio, organised by Mr. Powers of the Ivy Leaf Company, he became ill and was hospitalised. He was replaced by Barney Delaney. In 1894, he returned to Galway in order to bring his step-father to New York. Francis O'Neill
Francis O'Neill (August 28, 1848 – January 26, 1936) was an Irish-born American police officer and collector of Irish traditional music. His biographer Nicholas Carolan referred to him as "the greatest individual influence on the evolution of Irish traditional dance music in the twentieth century". Life O'Neill was born in Tralibane (also Trawlebane), near Bantry, County Cork. At an early age he heard the music of local musicians, among them Peter Hagarty, Cormac Murphy and Timothy Dowling. At the age of 16, he became a cabin boy on an English merchant vessel and remained a seaman until 1869. On a voyage to New York, he met Anna Rogers, a young emigrant whom he later married in Bloomington, Illinois. The O'Neills moved to Chicago, and in 1873 O'Neill became a Chicago policeman.
