John McKinnon (ophthalmologist)
John R. McKinnon (born 1938) is a New Zealand mountaineer and the first volunteer doctor at Kunde Hospital. John McKinnon was educated at St Kevin's College, Oamaru and the University of Otago. In 1962 he completed the first ascent of Mount Cook's south face with James Milne, Richard Stewart, & Peter Strang. This brought him to the attention of Edmund Hillary who had a policy of inviting young climbers on his aid / climbing expeditions to Nepal. In 1964 he completed the first ascent of Thamserku with Lynn Crawford, Pete Farrell, Richard Stewart and Phu Dorje Sherpa as part of Edmund Hillary's Schoolhouse Expedition. Kunde Hospital (sometimes Khunde Hospital, ne, कुन्दे अस्पताल) is a hospital in the town of Kunde, Nepal, that serves 8,000 people from Khumbu district. It is situated above sea level and was founded by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1966. The hospital was funded and operated by The Himalayan Trust until 1976 and is now supported by the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation. Edmund Hillary
Sir Edmund Percival Hillary (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. From 1985 to 1988 he served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh and concurrently as Ambassador to Nepal. Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school. He made his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II and was wounded in an accident. Thamserku is a mountain in the Himalayas of eastern Nepal. The mountain is connected by a ridge leading eastward to Kangtega. Thamserku is a prominent mountain to the east of Namche Bazaar and lies just north of Kusum Kangguru.
