John Martin (pioneer)
John Martin (December 11, 1827 – February 28, 1893), was an early pioneer of Monterey County, California. In 1859, he purchased near the mouth of Carmel Valley near today's Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, Carmel Mission, before the development of Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Martin homestead is now called Mission Ranch. It was bought in 1986 by Clint Eastwood, who restored the farmhouse, cottage, and barn in the style of the original buildings. Early life John Martin was born on December 11, 1827, in Strathaven, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were pioneers William Martin (1799-1885) and Agnes Martin (1797-1878). William and Agnes Martin emigrated from Scotland with their five sons, John (1827-1893), Robert (1828-1905), William (1832-1913), James (1835-1913), Thomas (1840-1911), and a daughter Mary (1837-1916). Strathaven
Strathaven (; from gd, Strath Aibhne ) is a historic market town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland and is the largest settlement in Avondale. It is south of Hamilton. The Powmillon Burn runs through the town centre, and joins the Avon Water to the east of the town. The current estimated population is 8,000. The town was granted a royal charter in 1450, making the Town of Strathaven a burgh of barony. The A71, which connects Edinburgh and Irvine, passes through the town. History A Roman road passes close by, on the south side of the Avon Water; it led to the Roman fort at Loudoun Hill near Darvel. The origins of Strathaven Castle are obscure, but it is believed to have been held by the Bairds until after the end of the Wars of Scottish Independence in 1357. Dryland Farming
Dryland farming and dry farming encompass specific agricultural techniques for the non-irrigated cultivation of crops. Dryland farming is associated with drylands, areas characterized by a cool wet season (which charges the soil with virtually all the moisture that the crops will receive prior to harvest) followed by a warm dry season. They are also associated with arid conditions, areas prone to drought and those having scarce water resources. San Carlos Cemetery (Monterey, California)
San Carlos Cemetery, also known as San Carlos Catholic Cemetery, was established as San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo in 1834, and is located at 792 Fremont Street in Monterey, California, Monterey, California. It is a Catholic Church, Catholic cemetery. History Burials started in 1832, two years prior to becoming an official cemetery and there are some unmarked graves. In 1939, the eastern land of the Monterey City Cemetery (or Cementerio El Encinal) was combined to increase the space. Isabel Leidig Building
The Isabel Leidig Building is a historic commercial building in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. It was built and designed in 1925, by master builder Michael J. Murphy as a restaurant. It is an example of a mix of Monterey colonial style with Spanish Colonial Revival. The structure is recognized as an important commercial building in the city's ''Downtown Conservation District Historic Property Survey,'' and was nominated and submitted to the California Register of Historical Resources on June 18, 2002. The building is occupied by Mulligan Public House pub and Gallery North. William Hatton (pioneer)
William Hatton (June 9, 1849 – October 22, 1894) was an American businessman who was one of Carmel Valley, California's pioneers. He was manager of the dairy and cattle interests of the Pacific Improvement Company, acquired land of his own, and became one of the wealthiest dairymen in Monterey County, California, Monterey County. Early life William Hatton was born on June 9, 1849, in Aghowle, County Wicklow, Ireland, fourth in a family of eight children. His father was Edward Hatton and mother Ann Kelly. He left Ireland at age thirteen and went to sea as an apprentice sailor. He lived a seafaring life for seven years, achieve the title of Chief mate, first mate. At age 20, he settled in Charleston, South Carolina where he worked as an agent for the United States Revenue Cutter Service, where he met Katherine Harney (1851-1922) a native of James Island, South Carolina.
