John Labatt
John Labatt (11 December 1838 – 27 April 1915) was a Canadian businessman and brewer. Labatt took charge of Labatt Brewing Company, formally known as Labatt and Company, after his father's death in 1866. Labatt helped Labatt Brewing Company eventually become the largest brewery in Canada. Early life Labatt was born in 1838 in Westminster Township, near London, Upper Canada, and was the son of Eliza (Kell), from Bradford, England, and John Kinder Labatt, an Irish immigrant and founder of the Labatt Brewing Company. He attended Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario, graduating in 1896. Labatt also attended Caradoc Academy, as well as secondary school in London, Upper Canada. Labatt went on to apprentice to American brewer George Weatherall Smith in Wheeling, West Virginia, from 1859 to 1864, where he learned the skills to work for his father's company. John Kinder Labatt
John Kinder Labatt (1803 – 26 October 1866) was an Irish-Canadian brewer and the founder of the Labatt Brewing Company. Life and career He was born in Queen's County (now County Laois), Ireland, to Valentine Knightley Chetwode Labat (1761–1813), an Irish-Huguenot, and Jane Harper Labat. Little is known of his early years. Labatt immigrated to Canada in the 1830s and initially established himself as a farmer near London, Upper Canada. In 1847, he invested in a brewery with a partner, Samuel Eccles, launching "Labatt and Eccles". When Eccles retired in 1854, Labatt acquired his interest and renamed the firm the "London Brewery". He was assisted by his sons Ephraim, Robert and John. John Sackville Labatt
John Sackville Labatt (March 10, 1880 – July 8, 1952) was a Canadian businessman who was the president of the Labatt Brewing Company and a prominent kidnapping victim. Early life He was one of nine children of John Labatt, and he was educated at Trinity College School and McGill University. It was he and his brother, Hugh Francis Labatt, who took up management of the firm upon their father's death in 1915. John Sackville became president of the company, and he held that position for several decades. In 1926, he married Elizabeth Anne Lynch. With her, he had three children: John Pridham, Arthur and Mary. Canada Temperance Act
The ''Canada Temperance Act'' (french: Loi de tempérance du Canada), also known as the ''Scott Act'', was an Act of the Parliament of Canada passed in 1878, which provided for a national framework for municipalities to opt in by plebiscite to a scheme of prohibition. It was repealed in 1984. Pre-Confederation colonial legislation Temperance legislation of general application had been enacted by the various colonies as early as 1855, when New Brunswick implemented total prohibition to mixed success. Others, beginning with the Province of Canada on the passage of the ''Dunkin Act'' in 1864, named after its sponsor Christopher Dunkin, opted to allow local municipalities to implement temperance upon an approval by plebiscite. Hume Blake Cronyn Jr. OC (July 18, 1911 – June 15, 2003) was a Canadian-American actor and writer. Early life Cronyn, one of five children, was born in London, Ontario, Canada.
