John Knight (baseball)
John Wesley Knight (October 6, 1885 – December 19, 1965) was an American professional baseball infielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) between 1905 and 1913 for the Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Americans, New York Yankees, New York Highlanders/Yankees, and Washington Senators (1901–60), Washington Senators. A native of Philadelphia, he was signed out of the University of Pennsylvania. Career Knight was nineteen when he entered the majors in 1905 with the Philadelphia Athletics, playing for them two and a half years before joining the Boston Americans (1907), New York Yankees, New York Highlanders/Yankees (1909–11, 1913), and Washington Senators (1901–60), Washington Senators (1912). Knight was in the Athletics 1905 Opening Day as a replacement for incumbent shortstop Monte Cross, out until mid-season with a broken hand. Retrieved 24 August 2009 was an architect and Government Resident of the Northern Territory in Australia. Early life Knight was born in London the son of John Knight, a stone and marble merchant. Knight became an engineer and for a time was superintendent of works for his father. He arrived in Melbourne, Australia in February 1852 and after a week on the goldfields, joined the Public Works Department. Although earning a large salary, Knight did not stay long in the public service. On resigning he began to practise as an architect in partnership with a Mr Kemp. A third partner, Peter Kerr, was added to the firm, but Kemp soon afterwards returned to England. John Gally Knight
John Gally Knight ( – 20 October 1804) was an English barrister who served in the House of Commons from 1784 to 1796. He was the eldest son of Rev. Henry Gally, rector of St. Giles-in-the Fields, Holborn, Middlesex and educated at Eton College (1753–57) and Trinity Hall, Cambridge (1757), where he was awarded LLB in 1764 and elected fellow in 1764. He trained in the law at Lincoln's Inn (1756) and was called to the bar in 1765. He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Aldborough at a by-election in January 1784, and held the seat until the 1796 general election, which he did not contest. He was born John Gally, but adopted the Knight name and arms in 1768 on inheriting substantial properties from his mother Elizabeth, sole heiress of the Knight family of Warsop, Firbeck and elsewhere. John Franklin Knight (12 December 1927 – 27 November 2022), known professionally as Dr James Wright, was an Australian medical professional who was notable for his books, television and radio appearances, and regular newspaper and magazine columns. He was also sometimes nicknamed "the Merry Medic". Wright was known for his ability to demystify complex medical issues for a nationwide audience. He took TV camera crews into hospital medical theatres and neonatal intensive care clinic. He taught the nation about emerging diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C, whilst destigmatising prejudices and hysteria surrounding these diseases. John Buxton Knight
John William Buxton Knight RBA (1843 – 2 January 1908), English landscape painter, was born in Sevenoaks, Kent. He started as a schoolmaster, but painting was his hobby, and he subsequently devoted himself to it. In 1861 he had his first picture hung at the Royal Academy. He was essentially an open-air painter, constantly going on sketching tours in the most picturesque spots of England, and all his pictures were painted out of doors. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. John Knight (25 December 1792 6 April 1864) was an English businessman and founder of John Knight Soap Works in London, which later became The Royal Primrose Soap Works. In 1810, John Knight started making candles and soaps, in his spare time, using scraps of material from his job working for a grocer in London. The son of a farmer, Knight was about 18 years old when he established a company in London that would last for 200 years. Early life John Knight was born on Christmas Day in 1792 to a large Quaker family of farmers in Hertfordshire, England. He left home at the age of 15, with only the money in his pocket, and set off to try and make his fortune in London. John Knight (died 1606) was a British explorer of Greenland and Labrador. He is known for two expeditions: he was a member of a Danish exploration of the coast of Greenland, and he led an expedition to discover the Northwest Passage, during which he was lost. Greenland In 1605 Knight took part in a Danish expedition to Greenland, led by John Cunningham with James Hall as pilot. Knight captained the pinnace ''Katten''. They sailed from Copenhagen on 2 May. On 30 May, in latitude 59° 50′, they sighted high land, which they called Cape Christian, but the ice prevented them from reaching it. On 12 June they sighted high land on the west coast of Greenland, and named Cape Anna after Anne of Denmark, wife of James I, Cape Sophia after her mother, King Christian's Fjord, and Cunningham Fjord, in latitude 67° 10′. John Knight (Royal Navy Officer)
Sir John Knight, KCB (''bap.'' 21 February 1747 – 16 June 1831) was a senior British Royal Navy officer during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries most noted for his activities as a post captain during the American and French Revolutionary Wars. Serving with the Caribbean Fleet during the American war, Knight fought several significant battles and was commended for his service and made tutor of the young Prince William. During the French wars he served with the North Sea fleet under Admiral Adam Duncan and was engaged at the Battle of Camperdown against the Dutch. During the Napoleonic Wars that followed he held a senior administrative role at Gibraltar and retired in 1815 to his home and eight children.
