John Kewley (mine Engineer)
John Kewley (1832 – 2 February 1905) was Captain of the Great Snaefell Mine, Isle of Man. He is remembered for his heroism following the Snaefell Mine Disaster of 1897, during which he displayed extraordinary courage and endurance and for which he received the Medal of the Honourable Order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. Snaefell Miners
Snaefell ( on, snjœ-fjall/snjó-fall – snow mountain) – ( gv, Sniaull) is the highest mountain and the only summit higher than on the Isle of Man, at above sea level. The summit is crowned by a railway station, cafe and several communications masts. Views It is a well-known saying in the Isle of Man that on a clear day six kingdoms can be seen from the top: the Isle of Man, England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Heaven. Some versions add a seventh kingdom, that of Manannán (or the sea). The plaque at the summit indicates the directions of five points from Snaefell as well as their distances: * to the Mull of Galloway (Scotland) * to Scafell (England) * to the Mountains of Mourne (Northern Ireland) * to Liverpool (England) * to Dublin (Republic of Ireland) (For some reason, Wales is absent from the plaque). John Henniker-Major, 5th Baron Henniker
John Major Henniker-Major, 5th Baron Henniker VD DL (7 November 1842 – 27 June 1902), was a British peer and Conservative politician. Background and education Henniker was the son of John Henniker-Major, 4th Baron Henniker, and was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, Political career Henniker was elected MP for East Suffolk in 1866, succeeding his father. He held the seat until 1870, when he succeeded his father as fifth Baron Henniker and second Baron Hartismere. The latter title had been granted to his father in 1866, and gave him a seat in the House of Lords (in contrast to the barony of Henniker which was in the Peerage of Ireland). The Great Laxey Mine Railway ( Manx: ''Raad Yiarn Meain Mooar Laksaa'') was originally constructed to serve the Isle of Man's Great Laxey Mine, a lead mine located in Laxey. The gauge railway runs from the old mine entrance to the washing floors along a right of way that passes through the Isle of Man's only remaining railway tunnel (another at Dhoon West Quarry is disused) under the gauge Victorian Manx Electric Railway and the main A2 Douglas to Ramsey coast road. History The Great Laxey Mine was an extensive system of mine shafts and tunnels, which descended to a depth of 2,200 feet underground. Laxey Wheel
The Laxey Wheel (also known as Lady Isabella) is built into the hillside above the village of Laxey in the Isle of Man. It is the largest surviving original working waterwheel in the world. Designed by Robert Casement, the wheel has a diameter, is wide and revolves at approximately three revolutions per minute. History The wheel was built in 1854 to pump water from the Glen Mooar part of the Great Laxey Mines industrial complex. It was named "Lady Isabella" after the wife of Lieutenant Governor Charles Hope, who was the island's governor at that time. The wheel is currently maintained by Manx National Heritage as part of the Great Laxey Wheel & Mines Trail. Snaefell Wheel
The Snaefell Wheel (also known as Lady Evelyn) is a waterwheel in Laxey, Isle of Man. The wheel stands in the washing floors in Laxey Glen Gardens, approximately 700 metres south of the larger Laxey Wheel. The wheel was unveiled with the name ''Lady Evelyn'' to mark the extensive work of Evelyn Jones in her support of the Laxey Mines Research Team. History The wheel was purchased by the Snaefell Mining Company in 1865. Built by Messrs Leigh and Gilbert Howell of the Hawarden iron works in Flintshire, north Wales, it was one of two identical 50 ft (15.24 m) diameter wheels to be produced. By 1910, the wheel had come to the end of its working life at the Snaefell Mining Company and was disassembled to be sent to Bodmin, Cornwall. Lonan (parish)
Lonan ( ; gv, Lonan) is one of the 17 parishes of the Isle of Man. It is located on the east of the island (part of the traditional ''South Side'' division) in the sheading of Garff. Other settlements in the parish include Baldrine and Ballabeg. Local government For the purposes of local government, since May 2016 the historic parish of Lonan has been part of a single Garff local authority, formed by merging the former village district of Laxey with the parish districts of Lonan and Maughold. Until this amalgamation, the village district of Laxey had been separated from its surrounding parish of Lonan since 1895.
