John Jeffrey (judge)
John Jeffrey ka John Jefferay(ca. 1524 – 13 May 1578), of Chiddingly, Sussex, was an English politician. He was a Member (MP) of the Parliament of England for Clitheroe in 1563, East Grinstead in 1571 and Sussex in 1572. Life He was son of Richard Jeffrey of Chiddingly Manor, by Eliza, daughter of Robert Whitfield of Wadhurst. He was admitted a member of Gray's Inn in 1544, called to the bar in 1546, and was Lent reader there in 1561. In Easter term 1567 Jeffrey became a serjeant-at-law, and on 15 October 1572 a queen's serjeant. On 15 May 1576 he was appointed a judge of the queen's bench, and was promoted on 12 October 1577 to succeed Sir Robert Bell as chief baron of the exchequer. In the autumn of 1578 he died at Coleman Street Ward, London, and was buried under a magnificent tomb in Chiddingly Church. Chiddingly
Chiddingly ( ) is an English village and civil parish in the Wealden District of the administrative county of East Sussex, within historic Sussex, some five miles (8 km) northwest of Hailsham. The parish is rural in character: it includes the village of Chiddingly and a collection of hamlets: the largest of these being Muddles Green and Thunder's Hill; others being Gun Hill, Whitesmith, Holmes Hill, Golden Cross, Broomham and Upper Dicker. It covers of countryside. Of the more than 340 dwellings in the parish, over fifty have the word "Farm" in their postal address. Geography The parish is in the Low Weald. Like Rome, it is founded upon seven hills: Thunders Hill; Gun Hill; Pick Hill; Stone Hill; Scrapers Hill; Burgh Hill, and Holmes Hill, which is on the A22 road in the south of the parish. Edward Montagu, 1st Baron Montagu of Boughton Order of the Bath, KB (AKA Sir Edward Montague of Boughton Castle) (c. 1562 – 15 June 1644) was an English politician. Life Montagu was the son of Edward Montagu of Boughton, Sir Edward Montagu and his wife Elizabeth Harington, a daughter of James Harington (lawyer), James Harington of Exton, Rutland, Exton. He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in about 1574 and graduated BA on 14 March 1579. He was a student of the Middle Temple in 1580. He succeeded his father in 1602. In 1584, he was elected Member of Parliament for Bere Alston (UK Parliament constituency), Bere Alston, in 1597 for Tavistock (UK Parliament constituency), Tavistock and in 1601 for Brackley (UK Parliament constituency), Brackley. Walter Covert
Sir Walter Covert (c. 1544 – 27 January 1632) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons several times during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Covert was the eldest surviving son of Richard Covert of Slaugham, Sussex. He was educated at Gray's Inn in 1567. He was knighted in 1591. He was appointed High Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex for 1583–84 and 1592–93. In 1581, 1586, 1614 and 1626 he was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Sussex, in 1584 for Newport, Cornwall and in 1593 for Petersfield. He married twice: firstly Timothea, the daughter of John Lennard of Chevening, Kent and secondly Jane, the daughter and coheiress of Sir John Shurley of Isfield, Sussex. He died childless and was succeeded by his niece, who outlived him by only a few months. Thomas Shirley (died 1612)
Sir Thomas Shirley (c.1542 – October 1612), of Wiston in Sussex, was an English Member of Parliament, government official and courtier who is said to have suggested the creation of the title of baronet. Family Thomas Shirley was the eldest of the three children of William Sherley (c.1498–1551) of Wiston, Sussex, and Mary Isley, the daughter of Thomas Isley of Sundridge, Kent. Career He was knighted in 1573, and served as High Sheriff of Surrey and Sussex in 1576. Also in 1573, he began rebuilding the family seat of Wiston House, which he turned into a massive country house. (It is now the site of the government's Wilton Park conference centre.) However, soon afterwards Shirley found himself in considerable financial difficulties which eventually swallowed the family fortune. Sir Robert Bell Serjeant-at-law, SL (died 1577) of Beaupré Hall, Norfolk, was a Speaker of the House of Commons (United Kingdom), Speaker of the House of Commons (1572–1576), who served during the reign of Elizabeth I of England, Queen Elizabeth I. A member of parliament (MP) is the representative in parliament of the people who live in their electoral district.
