John Hudson (basketball, Born 1954)
John Hudson (born May 29, 1954) is a retired American professional basketball player. After being drafted by the Chicago Bulls in 1976, Hudson went on to gain considerable fame in Iceland as one of the first foreign born professional players in the country. College career Hudson played college basketball for the Concord Mountain Lions from 1975 to 1976. In 1976, he was selected to the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference All-Tournament team after averaging 21.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game. Professional career Hudson was drafted by the Chicago Bulls in the 10th round of the 1976 NBA draft but did not make the opening day roster. In August 1978, he signed with reigning Icelandic champions KR, becoming one of the first foreign born professional players to play in the Úrvalsdeild karla. English National Cup (basketball)
The English National Cup is an annual basketball knock-out competition held between professional, semi-professional and amateur teams from the various divisions of the National Basketball League. For most of the competition's history, the draw has featured the elite of English basketball, but teams from the British Basketball League currently do not compete in the National Cup, as they compete in their own separate competition, the BBL Cup. The final is usually played midway through the season, at a neutral venue. The Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur men's basketball team, commonly known as ÍR, is the men's basketball department of Íþróttafélag Reykjavíkur. It is based in Reykjavík, Iceland and was one of the pioneers of basketball in Iceland and one of the founding members of the men's Úrvalsdeild. From 1954 to 1977, the team won fifteen national championships. In 1964, it became the first Icelandic team to compete in a continental competition when it defeated the Collegians from Belfast, 71-17, in the first round of the 1964–65 FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague). Jón Sigurðsson (basketball)
Jón Sigurðsson (born 6 March 1951) is an Icelandic former basketball player and the former captain of the Icelandic national basketball team. He was named the Icelandic Basketball Player of the Year in 1976 and 1978 and won the Icelandic championship in 1976, 1978 and 1979. In 2001, Jón was named as one of the twelve best Icelandic men's basketball players of the 20th century. Playing career Jón started his playing career with Ármann at the age of 16. In 1971, Jón led the Icelandic league in scoring, surpassing Einar Bollason and Þórir Magnússon by scoring 46 points in the last game of the season, despite having a fever. In 1975, Jón led the league again in scoring with 306 total points, passing Kolbeinn Pálsson in the last game of the season. ''Morgunblaðið'' (, ''The Morning Paper'') is an Icelandic newspaper. ''Morgunblaðið''s website, mbl.is, is the most popular website in Iceland. The Valur men's basketball team, commonly known as Valur, is a basketball team based in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is part of the Valur multi-sport club. History The club was founded as ''Gosi'' on 25 December 1951 and was one of the founding members of the Icelandic men's top division. On 22 December 1957 the club changed its name to ''Körfuknattleiksfélag Reykjavíkur'' (English: Reykjavík Basketball Club) and played under that name until 1970.
