John Hampden Gurney
John Hampden Gurney (15 August 1802 – 8 March 1862) was an Anglican clergyman and hymnist. Life Born the son of Sir John Gurney, Baron of the Exchequer in Serjeant's Inn, Fleet Street, London, England, he was educated in Chobham, Surrey and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. as 3rd classic in 1824 and became M.A. in 1827. He was an active supporter of the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and other religious societies. He died in London in 1862 and was buried in the Gurney family vault on the west side of Highgate Cemetery. There is both a short street close to Marble Arch and a primary school nearby in Nutford Place named after him (Hampden Gurney C of E primary school). John Gurney (judge)
Sir John Gurney KC (14 February 1768 – 1 March 1845) was a British barrister and judge. Born into a family of noted stenographers, he was educated at St Paul's School and was called to the bar by the Inner Temple on 3 May 1793. After distinguishing himself in a libel trial, Gurney became junior counsel in a variety of state trials during the 1790s. After several more noted cases during the early 19th century, he was knighted and made a Baron of the Exchequer on 13 February 1832, a position he gave up in 1845 due to ill health, dying the same year. Early life and education Gurney was born in London on 14 February 1768 into a noted family of stenographers, including Joseph Gurney (his father), William Brodie Gurney (his brother) and Thomas Gurney (his grandfather). He was educated at St Paul's School and then by Reverend Smith in Suffolk, and accompanying his father to court developed a love of the law. John Gurney is a British businessman and former football club chairman. He came to national attention for his eventful 55-day spell as chairman of Luton Town in the summer of 2003, during which time he sacked a manager via post and organised a "Manager Idol" phone-in to find a new one, whilst announcing plans for a massive new stadium on stilts, a change of club name, and a potential relocation. He had previously owned non-league clubs Farnborough Town, Southall and Ashford United, and rugby club Bedford. John Gurney (bass-baritone)
John R. Gurney (June 13, 1902 — August 6, 1997) was an American bass-baritone who had an active career as an opera, concert, vaudeville, and musical theatre performer from the 1920s through the 1940s. He was a principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera from 1936 through 1945 where he performed a total of 331 times. On the international stage he performed in operas at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. He is best remembered for creating roles in the world premieres of Walter Damrosch's ''The Man Without a Country'' (1937, Colonel Morgan) and Douglas Moore's ''The Devil and Daniel Webster'' (1939, Jabez Stone). Gurney Family (Norwich)
The Gurneys were an influential family of English Quakers, who had a major part in the development of Norwich, England. They established Gurney's Bank in 1770, which merged into Barclays Bank in 1896. Members of the family still live in the United Kingdom. History In the 17th century, John Gurney (1655–1721) left his home town of Maldon for Norwich to live and work among the Quakers of the city. Arriving there in 1667, he became active in the woollen trade. In 1687 he married Elizabeth Swanton (died 1727) of Woodbridge, by whom he had eight children. He died as a wealthy man in 1721, and was buried in "the old Dutch garden that the Friends had bought as their burial ground, the Gildencroft or Buttercup Field", on the land Gurney had received to tend when he first arrived in Norwich. John Gurney (1845–1887), a member of the renowned Gurney banking family of Norfolk, was mayor of Norwich. Early life John Gurney was born on 11 December 1845 at Earlham Hall, Norfolk, son of Rev John Gurney (1809–1856) and Laura Elizabeth Pearse (1825-1899) of Thorpe, Norfolk. Samuel Gurney (18 October 1786 – 5 June 1856) was an English banker and philanthropist from the Gurney family of Norwich. He should not be confused with his second son, Samuel (1816–1882), also described as banker and philanthropist, and a Member of Parliament.
