John Gilligan (Mayor Of Limerick)
John Gilligan is an independent politician and former Mayor of Limerick from 2008 to 2009. He was the first independent (non-party) politician to be mayor of limerick since 1962 and was the 812th Mayor of Limerick. He was elected in successive elections for the Limerick No. 2 electoral area and subsequently the Limerick East electoral area, from 1991. He has also stood for election to Dáil Éireann in the Limerick East constituency. Gilligan and Sinn Féin councillor Maurice Quinlivan were the only councillors on Limerick City Council to oppose the Household charge. Both men refused to pay the charge, and Gilligan spoke at a number of Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes protests. Limerick City Council ( ga, Comhairle Cathrach Luimnigh) was the authority responsible for local government in the city of Limerick in Ireland. The council had 17 elected members. Limerick East was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas from 1948 to 2011. Maurice Quinlivan (born 1967/1968) is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Limerick City constituency since the 2016 general election. Campaign Against Home And Water Taxes
The Campaign Against Home and Water Taxes (CAHWT) was a group opposed to the introduction of property and water taxes in the Republic of Ireland. It called for the boycott to be used to this effect. The campaign launched on 22 December 2011. It had a national presence, and was supported by numerous national representatives, including Joe Higgins, Clare Daly, Joan Collins, Séamus Healy, Richard Boyd Barrett and Thomas Pringle. It also had support from some Sinn Féin members and the Socialist Party. It was not supported by Fianna Fáil. 2019 Limerick City And County Council Election
A Limerick City and County Council election was held in County Limerick and Limerick City in Ireland on 24 May 2019 as part of that year's local elections. All 40 councillors were elected for a five-year term of office from 6 local electoral areas (LEAs) by single transferable vote. The 2018 boundary review committee recommended significant changes to the LEAs in the 2014 elections due to terms of references requiring a maximum of seven councillors in each LEA and changes in population revealed in the 2016 census. These changes were adopted by statutory instrument No. 624/2018. The election was held alongside a plebiscite on whether or not Limerick City and County would establish the position of a directly elected mayor for the council under the Local Government Act 2019.
