John Fawkes
John Fawkes (born 9 October 1933) is an English former first-class cricketer and British Army officer. Fawkes was born at Brampton, Derbyshire. He carried out his National Service in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps as a second lieutenant, starting in October 1953. In November 1954, he was transferred from the National Service list and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. His service took him to Kenya Colony, where he played minor matches for Kenya and East Africa. He later played first-class cricket for the Combined Services cricket team, making his debut against Warwickshire at Birmingham in 1959. He played three further first-class matches for the Combined Services in 1960, playing against Cambridge University, Surrey, and the touring South Africans. Brampton, Derbyshire
Brampton is a suburb in the west of Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Originally a village known as New Brampton and separate from the town, it became absorbed into it over time due to urban sprawl. It is centred on Chatsworth Road, the main arterial road (A619) that connects the town with the Peak District and Manchester. Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). In cricket, a player's batting average is the total number of runs they have scored divided by the number of times they have been out, usually given to two decimal places. Since the number of runs a player scores and how often they get out are primarily measures of their own playing ability, and largely independent of their teammates, batting average is a good metric for an individual player's skill as a batter (although the practice of drawing comparisons between players on this basis is not without criticism). The number is also simple to interpret intuitively. If all the batter's innings were completed (i.e. they were out every innings), this is the average number of runs they score per innings.
