John Fallon (golfer)
John Fallon (29 April 1913 – 7 December 1985) was a Scottish professional golfer whose career spanned the years either side of World War II. He was born in Lanark, Scotland. Although never a winner of a major tournament of note, Fallon often contended with high finishes – he lost the final of the 1954 British PGA Matchplay Championship, and was perhaps most unlucky that he missed out on a potential Open Championship that might have been played at St Andrews during the war years. He had placed third there in 1939, and then second in 1955, each time by just a handful of strokes. Fallon played on the 1955 Ryder Cup team and in 1963 he was non-playing captain of the Great Britain Ryder Cup team. Brighouse
Brighouse is a town within the metropolitan borough of Calderdale, in West Yorkshire, England. Historically within the West Riding of Yorkshire, it is situated on the River Calder, east of Halifax. Leeds Cup
The Leeds Cup is a golf tournament that has been played annually in northern England since 1902. The event is organised by the north region of the Professional Golfers' Association. It is the oldest trophy in professional golf that is still played for. The Tooting Bec Cup is older, having been first played for in 1901, but is no longer contested. The Leeds Challenge Cup was first contested in May 1902 at Leeds Golf Club. The Triangular Professional Tournament was a professional team match play golf tournament that was played at the Cawder Golf Club from 21 to 23 October 1937. England–Scotland Professional Match
The England–Scotland Professional Match was an annual men's professional golf competition between teams representing England and Scotland. It was played from 1903 to the start of World War I and was then revived in 1932 and played until the start of World War II. The match was played on a single day, generally a few days before the Open Championship. Except on one occasion, there were 12 players in each team who played 12 singles matches and 6 foursomes. Scotland won the inaugural match in 1903 but didn't win another match, although three matches were tied. The event was organised by the PGA and only members of the PGA were eligible to play. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. Eric Brown (golfer)
Eric Chalmers Brown (15 February 1925 – 6 March 1986) was a Scottish professional golfer. Eric Brown was born in Edinburgh. Aged fifteen months he moved to Bathgate, when his father George got a job as a technical-subjects teacher. Eric stayed in Stuart Terrace and played at the golf course across the road. He represented Great Britain in the Ryder Cup in 1953, 1955, 1957 and 1959 and had a 4–4–0 win–loss–half record. He won all of his four singles matches but lost his four foursomes matches. He topped the European Order of Merit in 1957. He was the non-playing captain of the British Ryder Cup teams in 1969 and 1971. He won the Scottish PGA Championship eight times between 1956 and 1968. Northern Professional Championship
The Northern Professional Championship was a professional golf tournament played in Northern England. The event was generally a regional tournament but from 1923 and 1927 and in 1936 it was an open event with significant prize money. The event was started in 1920 by the Northern section of the PGA with entry restricted to members of that section. In 1923 the Championship became a national event; the Championship being extended to 72 holes with £350 in prize money under the sponsorship of the Manchester ''Daily Dispatch''. In 1925 the prize money was increased to £1000 with £350 for the winner. In early 1928 the ''Daily Dispatch'' withdrew their support for the championship which had been planned for Birkdale in July.
