John Erskine Of Dun
John Erskine of Dun (1509–1591) was a Scottish religious reformer. Biography The son of Sir John Erskine, Laird of Dun, he was educated at King's College, University of Aberdeen. At the age of twenty-one Erskine was the cause — probably by accident — of a priest's death, and was forced to go abroad, where he came under the influence of the new learning. It was through him that Greek was first taught in Scotland by Pierre de Marsilliers, whom he brought to live at Montrose. This was a factor in the progress of the Reformation. Erskine was also drawn towards the new faith, being a close friend of George Wishart, the reformer, from whose fate he was saved by his wealth and influence, and of John Knox, who advised him to discountenance the mass openly. Erskine was a supporter of Mary of Guise during the war of the Rough Wooing and she wrote to him in March 1548 to thank him for his support of Mary, Queen of Scots, and recommended him to Henri II of France. John Francis Erskine, Earl of Mar (17411825) was restored by act of Parliament to the title of Earl of Mar There are currently two earldoms of Mar in the Peerage of Scotland, and the title has been created seven times. The first creation of the earldom is currently held by Margaret of Mar, 31st Countess of Mar, who is also clan chief of Clan Mar. The ... in June 1824, his 83rd year. The title had previously been forfeit, following the attainting of his predecessor, John Erskine in 1716 for having Jacobite sympathies. He died in August 1825. John Erskine, Earl Of Mar (1675–1732)
John Erskine, 23rd and 6th Earl of Mar, KT (1675May 1732), was a Scottish Jacobite who was the eldest son of Charles, 22nd and 5th Earl of Mar (who died in 1689), from whom he inherited estates that were heavily loaded with debt. He was the 23rd Earl of Mar in the first creation of the earldom. He was also the sixth earl in the seventh creation (of 1565). He was nicknamed Bobbing John, for his tendency to shift back and forth from faction to faction, whether from Tory to Whig or Hanoverian to Jacobite. Deprived of office by the new king in 1714, Mar raised the standard of rebellion against the Hanoverians; at the battle of Sheriffmuir in November 1715, Mar's forces outnumbered those of his opponent, but victory eluded him. At Fetteresso his cause was lost, and Mar fled to France, where he would spend the remainder of his life. The parliament passed a Writ of Attainder against Mar, for treason, in 1716 as punishment for his disloyalty, which was not lifted until 1824. He ... John Erskine, Earl of Mar (1585 – 1654) was a Scottish landowner. Career He was the son of John Erskine, Earl of Mar (1558–1634) and Anne Drummond (1555-1587), daughter of Lord David Drummond (d. 1571) and Lilias Ruthven. Until his father's death in 1634, he was known as John, Lord Erskine, or the "Master of Mar". Prince Henry, the son of James VI and I and Anne of Denmark was kept at Stirling Castle. After the Union of the Crowns in 1603, King James went to England. Anne of Denmark came to Stirling on 10 May to claim her son. The Earl of Mar was absent. John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar (died 28 October 1572) was a Scottish aristocrat and politician. He was the custodian of the infant James VI of Scotland and Regent of Scotland. Erskine was a son of John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine and Lady Margaret Campbell, a daughter of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll. His father was a guardian of King James V and afterwards of Mary, Queen of Scots. Career John was Commendator of Dryburgh Abbey from 1547, He succeeded his father as 6th Lord Erskine in 1552. Erskine joined the religious reformers in 1559, but was never very ardent in the cause. He did subscribe to the letter asking the Calvinist reformer John Knox to return to Scotland in 1557. John Erskine, 5th Lord Erskine (7 July 148711 November 1555) was a Scottish nobleman. He was the son of Robert Erskine, 4th Lord Erskine (died 1513) and Isabel Campbell, a daughter of George Campbell of Loudon. His family was claimant to the earldom of Mar; this was recognized in 1565 for his son, John. Following a dynastic dispute in the 19th century, John Lord Erskine was acknowledged, retrospectively, as the 17th Earl. Career On 3 August 1522, Erskine was appointed keeper of the ten-year-old King James V of Scotland and Stirling Castle. He had strict instructions from Margaret Tudor to hold the castle keys and set a password every night for the King's guards.
