John Egan (piper)
John Egan (1840–1897) was an Irish piper. Egan, known as ''The Albino piper'' was a native of Dunmore, County Galway. Like his countryman Patsy Touhey, he was lefthanded. His tutor in pipe music as Liam Dáll Connolly, and his grandson, John Burke (piper). He emigrated to the United States and spent much of his subsequent life in New York City, barring tours with John Cronan and Patsy Touhey across eastern states. Francis O'Neill preserves a comment by Nicholas Burke on Egan, who stated that Egan "was a grand player and very powerful in his music." Egan died in New York in 1897. Dunmore, County Galway
Dunmore () is a town in County Galway, Ireland. It is located on the N83 national secondary road at its junction with the R328 and R360 regional roads. The town belongs to an ancient tuath called Conmhaícne Dúna-Móir and Cenél Dubáin, ruled by Uí Conchobair of Ui Briuin Ai from the 12th century, and a capital of Connacht for a time. King Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair died here in 1156. Until the early 1980s, the N83 through Dunmore was on the main road from Sligo to Galway City. Improvements to the N17 route through Knock and Claremorris reduced the amount of traffic on the N83. History The ruins of Dunmore Castle are situated on a small hillock outside the village. Nicholas Burke
Nicholas Burke, (born 1837) was an Irish uilleann piper. Burke was born in the parish of Annaghdown. He emigrated to the United States as a young man, settling in Brooklyn, New York. There he worked as a carpenter, "developed into a skilful draughtsman, and eventually became a successful and prosperous builder." He gained a reputation as a piper of distinction, playing the uilleann pipes primarily for himself, or "the entertainment of his friends, and invariably in his own home." Captain Francis O'Neill relied heavily upon him as an informant for other Irish pipers of the 1800s, many of whom Burke was acquainted. Francis O'Neill
Francis O'Neill (August 28, 1848 – January 26, 1936) was an Irish-born American police officer and collector of Irish traditional music. His biographer Nicholas Carolan referred to him as "the greatest individual influence on the evolution of Irish traditional dance music in the twentieth century". Life O'Neill was born in Tralibane (also Trawlebane), near Bantry, County Cork. At an early age he heard the music of local musicians, among them Peter Hagarty, Cormac Murphy and Timothy Dowling. At the age of 16, he became a cabin boy on an English merchant vessel and remained a seaman until 1869. On a voyage to New York, he met Anna Rogers, a young emigrant whom he later married in Bloomington, Illinois. The O'Neills moved to Chicago, and in 1873 O'Neill became a Chicago policeman.
