John Duncan Stewart
John Duncan Stewart (October 16, 1859 – 1921) was a farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Cannington in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1905 to 1921 as a Liberal. He was born in Perth County, Canada West, and was educated there. Stewart received homestead land in Saskatchewan in 1882. He lived in Arcola, Saskatchewan and was manager for the Arcola Farmers' Elevator Company. Cannington (former Electoral District)
Cannington was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. This district was one of 25 created for the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. It was preceded by a Territorial constituency of the same name. The constituency was combined with the "Souris" district of Souris-Estevan (and renamed " Souris-Cannington"), and lost parts to Moosomin, Indian Head-Wolseley, Weyburn and Estevan before the 18th Saskatchewan general election in 1975. Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. The Saskatchewan Liberal Party is a liberal political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. The party was the provincial affiliate of the Liberal Party of Canada until 2009. The Province of Canada (or the United Province of Canada or the United Canadas) was a British colony in North America from 1841 to 1867. The homestead principle is the principle by which one gains ownership of an unowned natural resource by performing an act of original appropriation. Arcola, Saskatchewan
Arcola is a town in south-east Saskatchewan, Canada, approximately north and east of Estevan. Highway 13, Highway 604, and Arcola Airport provide access to the community. Arcola served as the location for the Allan King film feature of W.O. Mitchell's ''Who Has Seen the Wind''. History From 1757 to the 1850s the Fort Ellice- Wood Mountain Trail was used by early fur traders, Metis, and First Nations as a supply route from the buffalo hunting grounds near Wood Mountain to Fort Ellice. Pemmican was one of the main goods brought back to Fort Ellice. The trail ran along the south side of Moose Mountain Upland, through what is today Arcola. The Palliser expedition in 1857 and the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP), as part of the March West to deal with the Cypress Hills Massacre, in 1874 also went through this area. The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada.
