John Drake (pirate)
John Drake (c. 1560–1600s) was an English privateer who attempted an ill-fated incursion against the Spanish Empire on the shores of the Río de la Plata. He was the nephew of Francis Drake. Biography Around 1583, John Drake and his crew departed from the port of Plymouth to the south of the Atlantic Ocean. The ship under his command, The 40-ton bark ''Francis'', was part of the Edward Fenton expedition to the Pacific. After their victory at the battle of São Vicente and the subsequent split of the English force, Drake headed to the Rio de la Plata. The ''Francis'' was wrecked on the mouth of the river, in a shoal later known in Spanish as ''Banco Inglès'' after this incident. He and his men were captured by Charrúa natives in today's Uruguayan coast, with whom they remained captive for some time. An inquisitor was an official (usually with judicial or investigative functions) in an inquisition – an organization or program intended to eliminate heresy and other things contrary to the doctrine or teachings of the Catholic faith. Literally, an inquisitor is one who "searches out" or "inquires" (Latin ''inquirere'' < ''quaerere'', 'to seek'). Inquisitors sought out the social networks that people used to spread heresy. There were accounts where the Inquisition could not tell who was a heretic or devout, and they were killed anyway. One of these accounts was Arnaud Amalric at the storming of Béziers. The action of San Mateo Bay or action of Atacames Bay was a naval engagement which took place from 29 June to 1 July 1594 between the galleon ''Dainty'' under the command of English privateer Richard Hawkins and a Spanish squadron of three galleons commanded by Beltrán de Castro at the mouth of the Esmeraldas river, nowadays Ecuador.
