John Daggett
John Daggett (May 9, 1833 – August 30, 1919) was a mine owner and politician who served as the 16th Lieutenant Governor of California from 1883 to 1887. Biography Daggett was born in Newark, New York on May 9, 1833. At age 19 he moved to Nevada with his brother David, after mining for gold there, in 1853 they moved to California, where they became involved in several gold mining ventures. He bought into the Black Bear Mine in 1862, sold out in 1863, re-opened it in 1866, and sold out again in 1872. He bought it again in 1884. Daggett also held an interest in the Calico Silver Mine in San Bernardino County. The area around this site was later renamed Daggett in his honor. A Democrat, Daggett was elected to the California State Assembly in 1858, and re-elected in 1859 and 1880. Daggett was elected lieutenant governor in 1882, and served from 1883 to 1887. 1894-S Barber Dime
The 1894-S Barber dime is a dime produced in the United States Barber coinage. It is one of the rarest and most highly prized United States coins for collectors, along with the 1804 dollar and the 1913 Liberty Head nickel. One was sold in 2005 for $1.3 million, Another sold at auction in Tampa Florida on January 7th 2016 for $1.7 million. and another for $1.9 million in 2007. Only 24 were minted, and of those, only nine are known to survive; all nine (as was the entire mintage) were proof coins; two are heavily worn impaired proofs. Daggett is an unincorporated community located in San Bernardino County, California in the United States. The town is located on Interstate 40 ten miles (16 km) east of Barstow. The town has a population of about 200. The ZIP code is 92327 and the community is inside area code 760. History The town was founded in the 1880s just after the discovery of silver in the mines near Calico to the north. In 1882, the Southern Pacific Railroad with the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad (Later Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, BNSF) from Mojave was being completed in the area and it was thought that a good name for the town would be Calico Junction. But this name would be too confusing since it was right next to Calico, where silver was discovered. George Stoneman
George Stoneman Jr. (August 8, 1822 – September 5, 1894) was a United States Army cavalry officer and politician who served as the fifteenth Governor of California from 1883 to 1887. He was trained at West Point, where his roommate was Stonewall Jackson, and graduated in 1846. Stoneman served in the Army for thirty-six years, though he was relieved of command in 1871. During this time, he was involved in multiple conflicts, including the Mexican–American War, where he did not see any combat, the Yuma War, and the American Civil War. In 1861, Stoneman was promoted to Brigadier General, and was later put in command of the Army of the Potomac's 3rd Infantry Corps, and subsequently the newly-created cavalry corps. At the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863, under the command of Joseph Hooker, Stoneman failed in an ambitious attempt to penetrate behind enemy lines, getting bogged down at an important river crossing.
