John Cowley (actor)
John Cowley (8 September 1923 – 13 February 1998) was an Irish actor, best known for his role as paterfamilias, Tom Riordan, in the long-running RTÉ Television drama series, ''The Riordans''. From a farming background, Cowley was born in Navan, County Meath. Cowley entered the acting profession as a member of one of the touring companies that brought theatre to rural communities in Ireland up until the 1960s. John Cowley (British Army Officer)
Lieutenant general (United Kingdom), Lieutenant General Sir John Guise Cowley, (20 August 1905 – 7 January 1993) was a British Army officer and George Cross recipient who reached high rank in the 1950s. Military career Cowley was born at Mussoorie, North British Raj, India, the son of an army chaplain. Returning to England as a baby, his early years were spent in a Dorset village, where his father was the rector. Educated at Wellington College, Berkshire, Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Cowley was Officer (armed forces), commissioned into the Royal Engineers on 3 September 1925. He was promoted to lieutenant on 3 September 1927. Posted to India, by 1935 Cowley was attached to the 16th Army Troops Company, 2nd Queen Victoria's Own Madras Sappers and Miners (now the Madras Engineer Group of the Indian Army) in Quetta. John Cowley (cricketer)
John Norman Cowley (7 February 1885 – 5 August 1957) was an English first-class cricketer. Born at Marylebone, Cowley made his debut in minor counties cricket for Hertfordshire against Cambridgeshire at Fenner's in 1908. He played infrequently for Hertfordshire up until 1911, making a total of five appearances in the Minor Counties Championship. He appeared in a first-class cricket match for the Free Foresters against Oxford University at Oxford in 1914. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed without scoring by John Heathcoat-Amory in the Free Foresters first-innings, while in their second-innings he was dismissed by Orme Bristowe for the same score. He served in the London Regiment during World War I, initially as a private before promotion to lieutenant in February 1915. Bathurst 12 Hour
The Bathurst 12 Hour, currently known as the Liqui Moly Bathurst 12 Hour for sponsorship reasons, is an annual endurance race for GT and production cars held at the Mount Panorama Circuit, in Bathurst, Australia. The race was first held in 1991 for Series Production cars and moved to Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway in 1995 before being discontinued. The race was revived in 2007, again for production cars, before adding a new class for GT3 and other GT cars in 2011. This has led to unprecedented domestic and international exposure for the event. In all, eighteen races have taken place; seventeen at Mount Panorama and one at Eastern Creek Raceway (Sydney Motorsport Park). John Duncan Cowley FLA (1897–1944) was Director of the School of Librarianship of the University of London from 1934 to 1944 and was the Goldsmiths' Librarian in 1944. He joined the RAFVR in 1940 and was a Squadron Leader at the time of his death. John Lodge Cowley (1719, United Kingdom – buried 1797, United Kingdom) was an English cartographer, geologist and mathematician. John Cowley was a professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, for a number of years between 1761 and 1773. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in April, 1768. His mathematical methods were famous, but he was also an important geographer as well as Cartographer Royal to King George II. He specialised in maps that depicted the counties of the United Kingdom from which arose his most famous work, ''Counties of England''. Cowley published several maps, many of minute detail, and on them often appeared his name although on others appeared the name of Emanuel Bowen acting as engraver.
