John Cooke (Colorado Politician)
John B. Cooke III is an American politician who served in the Colorado Senate from the 13th district as a member of the Republican Party. He also served as the Minority Leader in the state senate from May 2022 to January 2023. Prior to his tenure in the state legislature, he served as sheriff of Weld County, Colorado. Cooke was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and educated at Arvada West High School and the University of Northern Colorado. He served in the Army National Guard with the 220th Military Police Brigade before joining law enforcement. He worked as a police officer in Breckenridge, Colorado before becoming the undersheriff of Weld County, Colorado, and then being elected as sheriff. He was elected to the state senate in the 2014 election and reelected in 2018. The ''Grand Junction Daily Sentinel'' is the largest daily newspaper in western Colorado, with distribution in six counties. History I.N. Bunting of Pennsylvania and Howard T. Lee founded the newspaper in 1893. In 1911, future U.S. Senator Walter Walker bought the newspaper. When he died in 1956, his son, Preston Walker, inherited the ''Sentinel'', managing it until he died in 1970. August William Ritter Jr. (born September 6, 1956) is an American politician and lawyer who served as the 41st Governor of Colorado from 2007 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the district attorney for Denver before his election to the governorship in 2006.
