John Clayton Cowell
Major-General Sir John Clayton Cowell PC KCB (14 January 1832 – 29 August 1894) was a British Army officer and later Master of the Queen's Household and lieutenant-governor of Windsor Castle. Early life Clayton was born at Bean, near Canterbury, in 1832 the son of John Clayton Cowell and Frances Ann Hester, daughter of the Rev. Richard Brickenden. He was educated at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. In 1850 he joined the Royal Engineers, he served with the Baltic fleet and at Crimea, where he was '' aide-de-camp'' to General Sir Harry Jones and where he wounded himself on 10 August 1854 by accidentally discharging a revolver he had borrowed from Bartholomew Sulivan. He was sent to recuperate on the hospital ship ''Belleisle''. Blean
Blean is a village and civil parish in the City of Canterbury, Canterbury district of Kent, England. The civil parish is large and is mostly woodland, much of which is ancient woodland. The village, developed village within the parish is scattered along the road between Canterbury and Whitstable, in the middle of the Forest of Blean. The parish of St. Cosmus and St. Damian in the Blean was renamed "Blean" on 1 April 2019. History According to Edward Hasted's 1800 county study, the village was once part of the king's ancient forest of Blean in the Hundred (county division), hundred of Westgate. The name Blean is the dative form of the Old English word ‘blea’ which means rough ground. Therefore the name of the parish means "the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian (sic) in the rough ground." Harry Jones (British Army Officer)
General Sir Henry David Jones DCL (14 March 1791 – 4 August 1866) was a British Army officer who became Governor of the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Life He was the fifth son of John Jones by his wife, Mary, daughter of John Roberts, Esq., of Landguard Fort, an officer 29th Foot, and was brother of Major-General Sir John Thomas Jones, Bart., KCB, and uncle of Sir Willoughby Jones, Bart., of Cranmer Hall, Fakenham, Norfolk. Educated at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Jones was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in September 1808. In 1809 he was involved in the attack on the fortress at Flushing during the Walcheren Campaign. He then took part in the defence of Cadiz in 1809, the Siege of Badajoz in 1812, the Battle of Vitoria in 1813 and the Battle of Nivelle in 1813. Lord Edward Pelham-Clinton
Lieutenant-Colonel Lord Edward William Pelham-Clinton (11 August 1836 – 9 July 1907), known as Lord Edward Clinton, was a British Liberal Party politician. Life Clinton was the second son of Henry Pelham-Clinton, 5th Duke of Newcastle and his wife Lady Susan Hamilton and educated at Eton until 1853. He joined the Rifle Brigade as an ensign in 1854 and served in the Crimea after the fall of Sebastopol. He reached the rank of captain in 1857 and spent 5 years in Canada (1861–1865). In 1878 he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and retired in 1880 while posted in India. Clinton was elected unopposed at the 1865 general election as Member of Parliament (MP) for North Nottinghamshire, but did not seek re-election in 1868. Clinton was Groom-in-Waiting to Queen Victoria from 1881 to 1894, then Master of the Household from September 1894 until her death in January 1901. Clifton-on-Yore is a civil parish in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire, England. The population of the parish was estimated at 40 in 2010. The population remained less than 100 as taken at the 2011 Census. Details were included in the civil parish of Thirn. Clifton Castle In parkland by the River Ure is Clifton Castle, a 19th-century country house on the site of a 14th-century castle of the Scrope family, of which a piece of walling survives. The house is built in ashlar with stone slate roofs to an essentially T-shaped plan with a two-storey, 5-bay main block at right angles to a 3-storey, 5-bay service wing. At the front the central 3 bays have 4 large Ionic columns supporting a frieze and pediment. Cowell is a coastal town on Franklin Harbor on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, in South Australia on the Lincoln Highway 111 km south of the major town of Whyalla. It is 493 km by road from Adelaide. Franklin Harbor is a natural harbour 49 km2 in area with a channel to the sea just 100 metres wide. The town of Cowell is the major population centre of the District Council of Franklin Harbour, and the centre of an agricultural district, farming wheat and sheep. HMS Belleisle (1819)
HMS ''Belleisle'' was a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 26 April 1819 at Pembroke Dockyard. ''Belleisle'' was converted to serve as a troopship in 1841 and sailed for China in Dec. 1841 for the First Opium War. She stayed in China until the Treaty of Nanking was signed in 1842. On 10 June 1856, she ran aground on the Englishman's Shoal, in the Bosphorus. She was refloated on 13 June. ''Belleisle'' was subsequently used as a hospital ship at Chatham, Kent, Chatham. In June 1866, she was lent by the British Admiralty, Admiralty to the Seamen's Hospital Society for use as a hospitaly ship in London for seamen suffering from cholera. Whilst being towed up the River Thames by the tugboat, tug ''Medusa'', she ran aground, but was refloated on the next tide. ''Belleisle'' was broken up in 1872.
