John Charlton (artist)
John Charlton (1849–1917) was an English painter and illustrator of historical and especially battle scenes, mainly from contemporary history. Early life Born to Samuel Charlton and his wife Mary Ann (née Pickering) Charlton on 28 June 1849, in Bamburgh, Northumberland, he received his first lessons in drawing from his father when he was only three or four years old, and within a few years was drawing horses with some skill. Due to his family’s financial misfortunes, he had to attend Dr. Sharp’s charity school held in Bamburgh’s great castle, and a few years later, was forced to quit and find employment. A job in the Newcastle bookshop of Mr. Robinson, a keen collector of the work of Thomas Bewick, "the father of wood engraving,” gave him an appreciation of graphic art. John Charlton (historian)
John Charlton (born 1938 in Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom), is a British historian working in the Marxist tradition. He was a founding member (1961) of the Newcastle Branch of the International Socialists (IS) and has been a member of the IS and Socialist Workers Party in York, Leeds and Newcastle. He is a visiting fellow in history at the University of Newcastle. He was educated at Heaton Grammar School, Newcastle upon Tyne followed by Dudley College of Education. He is a graduate of York and Leeds universities and worked as a school teacher in Newcastle (1959–1964). Charlton lectured in History and Politics, Leeds Polytechnic (1970–1989) and Leeds University (1990–1999). He is closely involved in the North East Labour History Society and has been Secretary and Editor of the Society’s journal, ''North East History''. John Charlton (jockey)
John "Johnny" or "Jack" Charlton (1829–1862) was a British jockey, most famous for winning an Oaks/Derby double on Blink Bonny, only the second filly to complete the feat. Early career Charlton was born at Stranton near West Hartlepool to the landlord of the Blacksmith's Arms. Despite this birthplace, he would later come to consider himself "all but Yorkshire". He trained as a jockey with Bob Johnson in Middleham, then moved to a Mr. Armstrong in Richmond, and then to John Scott in Whitewall, where he completed his training. He rode trials for Scott, and began to race-ride, but the relationship was strained, and Charlton was dismissed from Scott's yard, with a companion, under suspicion that he had "got at" stable favourite Newminster, even though evidence for this is scant. Malmesbury was a parliamentary borough in Wiltshire, which elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1275 until 1832, and then one member from 1832 until 1885, when the borough was abolished. Sir John Alexander Macdonald (January 10 or 11, 1815 – June 6, 1891) was the first prime minister of Canada, serving from 1867 to 1873 and from 1878 to 1891. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career that spanned almost half a century. Macdonald was born in Scotland; when he was a boy his family immigrated to Kingston in the Province of Upper Canada (today in eastern Ontario). Ingrid Maree (née Rounsaville) Lyne (August 2, 1975 – April 8, 2016) was an American nurse from Renton, Washington, whose dismembered body parts were discovered in the Seattle area on April 10, 2016. On April 11, 2016, John Robert Charlton was arrested and two days later charged with first-degree murder. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Ingrid Lyne Lyne was a 1993 graduate of Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Arizona, and received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in 1997 from the University of Arizona. John Thompson Charlton, also known as John Charlton Thompson (1826 – 26 November 1878) was a politician in colonial Victoria (Australia), a member of the Victorian Legislative Council. Early life Charlton was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, the son of Thomas Charlton and his wife Rebecca, ''née'' Thompson and was baptised on 21 June 1826. Charlton married Hannah Elizabeth Breeze on 30 September 1850 at St Mary-at-Lambeth, Surrey, and the couple emigrated to Australia. Career in Australia Charlton was elected member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Ripon, Hampden, Grenville and Polwarth in December 1853, a position he held until he resigned in September 1854. John Chardon (also Charden, Charldon and Charlton) (died 1601) was an Englishman who became the Church of Ireland bishop of Down and Connor from 1596 to 1601. Life A native of Devon, he became a sojourner of Exeter College, Oxford, in 1562 at a young age. He was elected probationer on 3 March 1565, and after some wildness, on 24 October 1566 was admitted full and perpetual scholar after he had publicly sworn obedience to the statutes.
