John Burke, 9th Earl Of Clanricarde
John Burke, 9th Earl of Clanricarde (; ); 1642–1722) was an Irish soldier and peer who was a Colonel during the Williamite War in Ireland. Career Burke was a younger son of William Burke, 7th Earl of Clanricarde and succeeded his brother Richard. He was created Baron Bophin (over the isle of Inishbofin where Burke is still a common surname amongst the islanders) in 1689 and commanded a foot regiment as its colonel during the Williamite War in Ireland. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Aughrim in 1691 and outlawed. His younger brother Ulick Burke, 1st Viscount Galway was killed in the same battle. In 1703 he obtained a reversal in return for a fine of twenty-five thousand pounds and the commitment that his two eldest sons would be raised as Protestants, after a private act of the English Parliament. Michael Burke, 10th Earl Of Clanricarde
Michael Burke, 10th Earl of Clanricarde (; ; 1686–1736), styled Lord Dunkellin (; ) until 1722, was an Irish peer who was Governor of Galway (1712) and a Privy Counsellor in Ireland (1726). Career He was the son of John Burke, 9th Earl of Clanricarde and educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was appointed Governor of Galway in 1712 and invested as a Privy Counsellor in Ireland on 15 July 1726. On his death he was buried in Christchurch, Dublin. Family He married Anne, the daughter of Speaker John Smith and the widow of Hugh Parker, who after her death in 1732 was buried in the nave of Westminster Abbey. Earl of Clanricarde (; ) is a title that has been created twice in the Peerage of Ireland, first in 1543 and again in 1800. The former creation became extinct in 1916 while the 1800 creation is extant and held by the Marquess of Sligo since 1916. Clanricarde was a Gaelic title meaning ''"(head of) Richard's family"'' (also known as Mac William Uachtar/Upper Mac William) and this family were descended from Richard Mór de Burgh, 1st Lord of Connacht (d.1243), son of William de Burgh (d.1205/6), founder of the de Burgh/Burke family in Ireland. Hodges Figgis is a bookshop located on Dawson Street in Dublin. Founded in 1768, it was moved and expanded numerous times until 1992, when it settled into its current location at 56-58 Dawson Street. It is given a passing mention in James Joyce's modernist novel '' Ulysses'', where it would have been situated at 104 Grafton Street. The shop briefly housed a coffee shop on the first floor, but this was removed in 2002 during renovations to expand the space used for the shelving of stock. James Talbot was an Irish Jacobite who served James II in the Irish Army during the War of the Two Kings (1689–91) and was killed at the Battle of Aughrim. Birth and origins James was the eldest son of Sir Henry Talbot and his wife Margaret Talbot. His father owned land around Templeogue, County Dublin. His mother was the third daughter of Sir William Talbot, 1st Baronet of Carton, County Kildare, and his wife Alison Netterville. He was the brother of William Talbot, also a Jacobite commander.
