John Benetti
John Anthony Benetti (17 June 1937 – 31 October 2013) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Benetti was a popular player with Carlton supporters, who nicknamed him "Tank" due to his thick thighs and direct style of play from defence. He also earned the nickname "Troubles" from Carlton's then Chairman of Selectors Jack Wrout in response to his habit of complaining whenever he was omitted from the senior team. Benetti had played schoolboy football at CBC Parade alongside his first cousin Sergio Silvagni, who also started at Carlton in 1958. From 16 games in 1958, Benetti polled 12 Brownlow Medal votes to finished equal 13th overall and the best placed Carlton player. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Jack Wrout
John Everett Wrout (8 October 1911 – 16 June 1981) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Herbert Wrout (1884-1950), and May Victoria Wrout (1888-1953), née Hay, John Everett Wrout was born at West Melbourne, Victoria on 8 October 1911. He married Nancy Jean Ryan (1916-2008), the sister of Reg Ryan, in 1935. They had two children: John, and Nancy May (1937-), later Mrs. Vincent Patrick Heffernan. Sergio Silvagni
Sergio Valentino Silvagni (28 June 1938 – 15 July 2021) was an Australian rules footballer who played for the Carlton Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL), mostly as a ruck-rover. He was the first of three generations to represent Carlton at VFL/AFL level, followed by his son Stephen and grandson Jack. Early life and family The son of Italian immigrants Giacomo Silvagni and his wife Antonia, Sergio lived with his parents and sister Milena in a single fronted dwelling in Canning Street, Carlton, very close to the famous Lygon Street precinct, the epicenter of Melbourne’s Italian community. Brownlow Medal
The Charles Brownlow Trophy, better known as the Brownlow Medal (and informally as "Charlie"), is awarded to the "best and fairest" player in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the home-and-away season, as determined by votes cast by the three officiating field umpires after each game. 1962 VFL Season
The 1962 VFL season was the 66th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 21 April until 29 September, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Essendon Football Club for the eleventh time, after it defeated by 32 points in the 1962 VFL Grand Final. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL).
