John Bell (1930s Scottish Footballer)
John Bell was a Scottish professional association footballer who played as a forward. Bell played in the Scottish Leagues for Beith and Queen of the South before joining Preston North End. Bell was signed to Beith before leaving at the start of the 1932–33 season to join Queen of the South."The Queens 1919 – 2004" Iain McCartney, Creedon Publications 2004 Scoring 14 goals in his first season at Queens, Bell was part of the promotion winning Queen of the South side who gained their first promotion to the top division in Scotland. Palmerston Park
Palmerston Park is a football stadium on Terregles Street in Dumfries, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is the home ground of Scottish League One club Queen of the South, who have played there since 1919. South of Scotland League club Heston Rovers have shared Palmerston since 2013. The stadium has a capacity of of which 3,377 are seats. History Palmerston Park was first opened in 1919, when Queen of the South were formed, although football had been played at the site since the 1870s. The site of the ground was formerly a farm called Palmers Toun. This is on the Maxwelltown side of the River Nith in Dumfries. Jimmy McKinnell, Tom Wylie and Willie McCall were all sold to Blackburn Rovers around the same time by Queen of the South. Billy Halliday
William Halliday (14 November 1906 – 1989) was a Scottish professional association football inside left who played for Queen of the South, Newcastle United, Third Lanark, Exeter City and St Cuthbert Wanderers. Career Born in Dumfries, Halliday was an inside left and signed for hometown club Queen of the South in 1923. His brother Dave Halliday had played for Queen's before him in 1920, alongside Ian Dickson. Billy Halliday was a strong and fearless type of player who always gave his all. His first game was a friendly match versus Manchester University at Palmerston Park that Queen's won 4–1, with Halliday scoring on his debut. The 1926–27 season saw Queen's drawn for the first time in a cup competition against Old Firm opposition. They took eventual winners Celtic to a replay before being eliminated from the Scottish Cup. Willie Ferguson
William Copeland Ferguson (13 February 1901 – 31 August 1960) was a Scottish footballer and manager best known for his time at Chelsea and Dumfries side Queen of the South. His position was usually as a left winger. Early years Ferguson was born in Muirkirk, Ayrshire to Daniel Ferguson, a coal miner, and Barbara, née Brown. He was still a child when his family moved to Kirkconnel, where he started in football with local junior side Kello Rovers. Queen of the South (1st spell) Willie Ferguson first joined fledgling Queen of the South in nearby Dumfries during season 1921–22, their third season after formation. Ferguson was the fourth of the players at the club in its first three seasons who would go on build successful careers in England's top division. Willie Savage
William Savage (1888–1961) was a Scottish footballer who played as a full back for Queen of the South from 1932 to 1946. Early days Savage was a native of Burnbank, Lanarkshire, who began his football as an inside forward at the local St Cuthbert School and represented Lanarkshire elementary schools against Glasgow. On leaving school he played in the junior league as centre forward for his local club Burnbank. Three seasons later he went to St Cuthbert C.Y.M.S. This was a one-season stay before returning to Burnbank for a further season. The next season, he was with Falkirk side Shieldhill Thistle. He played for the Hamilton 'A' team before rejoining the junior league with Motherwell Juniors. Dumfries
Dumfries ( ; sco, Dumfries; from gd, Dùn Phris ) is a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. It is located near the mouth of the River Nith into the Solway Firth about by road from the Anglo-Scottish border and just away from Cumbria by air.
