John Barker (businessman)
John Barker (1847 – 21 May 1925) was a South Australian businessman and sportsman, noted for his long chairmanship of the South Australian Jockey Club. History Alfred Barker (c. 1812 – 24 January 1880) and Priscilla Barker (1816 – 31 December 1900) née Chambers, a sister of James Chambers. Alfred arrived in South Australia as an officer on the brig ''Rapid'' in August 1836, his wife-to-be Priscilla aboard ''John Renwick'' in February 1837. They married in 1842. Alfred died at Baldina House, St. John's Wood, now part of Prospect, South Australia; Priscilla died at Henley Beach, South Australia John Barker was born in Yankalilla, educated at John L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution and was employed as a clerk with the Bank of Australasia. He married his cousin Catherine Chambers, daughter of James Chambers. Alfred Barker (pastoralist)
Alfred J. Barker (1873–1940) was an English association football manager who managed Stoke between 1908 and 1914. Career Barker was born in Stoke-upon-Trent and became a referee for the Football League and was also a supporter of his local team Stoke. He retired from officiating in 1907 and when Stoke suffered financial meltdown in 1907–08 which led to the club being liquidated and leaving the Football League, Barker and a number of wealthy supporters got together and bought the club back from the brink of extinction. They formed a new company re-branded Stoke Football Club (1908) Limited with Barker being appointed secretary-manager. Barker's impressive efforts led to Stoke being included for re-election but lost out to Tottenham Hotspur and their exit from the Football League was sealed. The Adelaide Steamship Company was an Australian shipping company and later a diversified industrial and logistics conglomerate. It was formed by a group of South Australian businessmen in 1875. Their aim was to control the transport of goods between Adelaide and Melbourne and profit from the need for an efficient and comfortable passenger service. For its first 100 years, the company's main activities were conventional shipping operations on the Australian coast, primary products, consumer cargoes and extensive passenger services. In the 1930s and 1940s, the company diversified into the airline operations, towage, shipbuilding, and the shipping of salt, coal and sugar. Adelaide Airways was formed in 1935, and purchased West Australian Airways before merging with Holyman's Airways to form Australian National Airways (ANA) in 1936. Katherine, Northern Territory
Katherine is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated on the Katherine River, after which it is named, southeast of Darwin. It is the fourth largest settlement in the Territory and is known as the place where "The outback meets the tropics". Katherine had an urban population of approximately 6,300 at the 2016 Census. Adelaide Racing Club was a horse racing club which had its origins around 1870 but founded in 1879 in competition with the South Australian Jockey Club. The A.R.C. held their race meetings on the "Old Adelaide Racecourse" (later known as Victoria Park) which they rented from the Adelaide City Council, while the S.A.J.C. owned Morphettville Racecourse freehold. The South Australian Derby is a South Australian Jockey Club Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, at set weights, run over a distance of 2,500 metres at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide, Australia during the SAJC Autumn Carnival. History The inaugural running of the race was on 5 January 1860 at Thebarton Racecourse which is located today in Mile End. The race was called The Thebarton Derby and had stakes of 100 sovereigns with an additional sweep of 10 sovereigns with a forfeit of 2 sovereigns. The race was won by the famous colonial pastoralist C.B. Fisher's, four-year-old mare Midnight who carried 8 stone 10 pounds and ridden by jockey Simpson in a time of 2:54.
