John Bailey (Victorian Politician)
John Robinson Bailey (1826 – 6 May 1871) was an Australian politician from 1 October 1859 to 1 July 1861 and Postmaster-General under the Nicholson administration from October 1859 to October 1860. Bailey was born in Leicester, England. He arrived in Australia in June, 1852 and set up a hosiery and outfitting warehouse in Eureka House, Malop Street, Geelong. He stated he had thirteen years experience in London and New York. He later traded as Bailey & Honey. He purchased crown land in Germantown, Victoria Australia (now named Grovedale). He farmed this land for four or five years while at the same time took part in editorial work of the ''Geelong Observer''. In 1858 he moved to Ballarat where he edited the ''Ballarat Star'', which he retained until he went into parliament. He became MLA after winning the seat of Ballarat West on 1 October 1859 and finishing on 1 July 1861. William Nicholson (Australian Politician)
William Nicholson (27 February 1816 – 10 March 1865) was an Australian colonial politician who became the third Premier of Victoria. He is remembered for having been called the "father of the ballot" due to his responsibility in introducing the secret ballot in Victoria. Early life Nicholson was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland, the son of an Anglican farmer. At the age of twenty six, in 1842, he emigrated to Australia, setting up business as a grocer in Melbourne. He was a successful businessman and became the head of a merchant firm, W. Nicholson and Company. In 1848 Nicholson was elected to the Melbourne City Council, and served as Mayor of Melbourne (1850–51). He was also a director of the Bank of Victoria and several other companies. Grovedale is a southern suburb of Geelong, Victoria, Australia. At the , Grovedale had a population of 14,869. History Toponymy The locality was originally named ''Germantown'' because several families of German Lutheran origin had settled there in 1849, with the German community expanding in the following decades. German Cottage, a house from this period located on the Surf Coast Highway (Torquay Road), is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. Following the outbreak of the First World War, and particularly after the sinking of the ''RMS Lusitania'' by a German submarine in May 1915, there was agitation to change the name of the area. A well-attended meeting at Germantown on 31 May 1915 agreed to recommend to the South Barwon Shire Council that the name should be changed to Marlborough or Cornwall. ''The Ballarat Star'' was a newspaper in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, first published on 22 September 1855. Electoral District Of Ballarat West
The Electoral district of Ballarat West (initially spelt Ballaarat West) was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It existed from 1859–1927 and from 1992–2014. The original seat was created for the second election to the Legislative Assembly in 1859. In 1927, it was merged with Ballaarat East to form a single Ballaarat electorate. Its second implementation occurred in 1992, when it replaced Ballarat North. Unlike Ballarat East, which had a rural character, Ballarat West was mostly urban, and included much of Ballarat proper and its southern and western suburbs. Christ Church, Geelong
The Christ Church is an Anglican church located in , Victoria, Australia. Designed by Edmund Blacket, the church is the oldest Anglican church in Victoria, in continuous use on its original site. On 9 October 1974 the church was listed on the Victorian Heritage Register with the following statement of significance: History The Geelong parish pre-dates the Diocese of Melbourne and was founded on 7 October 1843, when the Bishop of Australia, William Grant Broughton, laid the foundation stone at the north-east corner of the present nave. The church was opened and dedicated on 27 June 1847, and the enlarged church was consecrated on 25 October 1859. The church is the only one in Victoria designed by the colonial architect, Edmund Blacket. It was enlarged in 1855 by the addition of the transepts and sanctuary. In 1941 Walter Charles Kernot, died. Christ Church, South Yarra is the Anglican parish church of the suburb of South Yarra in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The parish is in the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne and dates from 1856. The parish is well known as belonging to the Anglo-Catholic or High Church tradition; it was the location of the ordination of the first woman to be a deaconess in Australia in 1884. History The earliest history of the church and parish is complicated. In 1852 land was set aside for a parish district including what is now South Yarra. Community meetings were held in the Ayres Arms Hotel and the South Yarra Hotel (now the Arcadia), and early services were held in the nearby Presbyterian Sunday School. Richmond is an inner-city suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Yarra local government area. Richmond recorded a population of 28,587 at the 2021 census, with a median age of 34. A.W.Howitt recorded the Kulin/Woiwurrung name for Richmond as Quo-yung with the possible meaning of 'dead trees'. Boroondara General Cemetery
Boroondara General Cemetery, often referred to as Kew cemetery, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Victoria, Australia, created in the tradition of the Victorian garden cemetery. The cemetery, located in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne, is listed as a heritage place on the Victorian Heritage Register. History The cemetery site was reserved in 1855 and trustees were first appointed in 1858. A site plan was drawn up by Frederick Acheson, a civil engineer in the Public Lands Office, with the layout segregated by religious denomination, a common occurrence at the time. The first burial took place in 1859. In 1864 Albert Purchas, who was architect and surveyor for the Melbourne General Cemetery, joined the trust.
